As for OP's question, I agree with your comments Gallo. He probably has some habits from driving a NA car (like I did). Our cars really hate to lug and it's better to catch a lower gear and rev higher.
I'm right behind you, man. 50's just a little more than a year away for me. AARP, here we come!

The only time my car acts like a spoiled child is in stop-and-go traffic, which there is a lot of in So Cal. Many times I'll accelerate to 3 or 4 miles-per-hour and just throw it in neutral to coast rather than try to feather the throttle in 1st and end up bucking like a mechanical bull.
