I am not convinced their would even be a MPG hit in real world driving. Going from a Impreza to a Legacy I lost
1 MPG. Presumably this smaller-than-expected hit is from the Legacy operating at a much lower RPM compared to the Impreza. I live in the Northeast where flat ground is rare, the Legacy just has a much easier and smooth time getting around. This is measured over 30+ tanks of gas in each car on the same roads and during the same time of year.
Also with the Legacy I can regularly beat the highway MPG value on trips, with the Impreza I got over the highway MPG number once. Ever. That included 10+ trips with over 500 miles of sustained highway driving.
The 2.0 looks decent on paper however it is a bad pairing in the car. Maybe it works out better for people that live on flat ground in the south.
I would gladly buy another Impreza if I could get one with a 2.5.
