If the Impreza burns .5 gal an hour at Idle (just a guess) and you can reduce idling by 10 minutes a day, 365 days a year by shutting down, you save abt. 30.5 gallons per year or $122 @ $4 per gallon. One starter replacement, if you pay out of pocket, could negate a couple years of effort.
certainly, if i know there is going to be a long wait (like a train, or on the highway where cars pile up because of construction), i shut the car off. but i think i'd have to turn my car off up to 8 times in my 4.1 mile commute which would get tiresome and i would think ultimately put a lot of extra wear on the starter, etc. (but just guessing...not a lot of data points to back up this line of reasoning )
