My thinking is this - the driver knows how important you are. That's all that matters.

Monte Carlo 2004, I believe, was the first race to get rid of the names. A few teams (Subaru and Ford IIRC) had their co-driver names still on at the start of the race. They were told to take them off at first service, or face disqualification.
Peugeot had an interesting way around the issue, they put the co-driver name and flag just as big, but on the paint under the rear side window.
