It's not bad thinking (get an STI and resell if needed), they have sold more WRX/STI's this generation so there are more used ones out there. Resale is still quite good, but not what it was for previous gen depending on location and supply of used ones.

I don't see why you would not be happy in a 2019 STI. They are fun and functional cars. Golf R is also a good choice in that the backseat is really roomy, it can put up really good performance numbers, and the interior is Audi level. The ride is not nearly as firm/rough as the STI/Focus RS. I just don't feel that the car is as fun as the Focus RS or STI. It's very German precision like without much soul or character. But as a daily driver and good place to be for driver and passengers, yeah it's right up there.
