The oil light should go off right away if everything is functioning as it should. As long as you don't hear any loud thumping or tapping on start up you might be ok. As a general rule with subaru's though, you NEVER want to see that oil light illuminate as that light comes on when there is less then 2psi oil pressure I believe. You typically don't want to see anything lower then 25psi at idle for oil pressure on these motors and anything less can cause potential bearing damage.

It could also be something very simple..here's a quote from KILLERBmotorsport who is a vendor on this forum. "Your oil pressure is fine, you have a bad connection from sensor to block. Usually caused by corrosion or moisture. The sender is below the alternator on the top of the block. Remove, clean and reinstall.

If you had low oil pressure (the light comes on at 2.1psi) the light comes ON."
