I've read on other vehicles if the HVAC filter isn't change it will "clog"up just like the filter on your house's HVAC system. It will put stress, make the compressor work harder, and cause it to fail prematurely.

Not sure if this translates to Subaru...but make sense in my head what I know about increased pressures in an HVAC due to dirty filter/coils.
