When I used to do a lot of nonlinear video editing (a few years ago), there was absolutely NO editing equipment that performed properly with AMD processors. I remember that Pinnacle Systems offered no support for their desktop video products when used on an AMD machine. While I too am a big fan of AMD processors (I own 2 Athlon machines), I would be very very cautious about using an AMD based computer for video editing.

If you friend is strictly going to be using firewire (digital only) for video transport into and out of the computer, the AMD may work fine, since firewire is an IEEE standard. If your friend will be adding additional MPEG2 capture boards (analog video) or rendering accelerators, the AMD may cause problems.

Video editing will require tons and tons of memory. I would recommend no less than 1GB. I would also look for error-correcting memory as well for a more stable system. It will cost a little more, but you will be using your memory extensively.

Be sure that the graphics card is fully compatible with the latest version of DirectX (most new cards are). I used to run into a number of problems with video overlay while working in Adobe Premiere that were caused by drivers that didn't fully support DirectX.

If your friend's video capture board (assuming he will also be working with analog) does not have an integrated sound card, be sure to get a high-end sound card such as Creative Labs. Cheaper cards tend to have "clock drift" that will cause the audio to lose sync with the video during playback.

Also, a large screen is very important for video editing. If possible, use 2 monitors. One for your editing timeline, and another as a full-screen video preview.

These are the problems and special considerations I have run into throughout my experience with video editing. I hope it helps in making hardware choices.
