Default Stalling problem...

Hi folks.

I'm posting this for a friend who has an older model impreza (mid-90's). We're having an issue where the car is throwing a CE light, giving the reason as a problem with the fuel pump relay system. The car semi-stalls intermittently while driving, in any gear, at any speed above idle. The car dosent stall completely, though -- the tach drops to zero and quickly jumps back up again.

Would it be a bad idea to hard-wire the relays (so that the circuits they control are always "on") just to see if that is the problem? Any other ideas on what it could be? I think he has replaced the relays once already.

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks...

Hardwiring the relays won't hurt anything, just be sure to rememer to undo it. I would suspect an electrical problem, because of the tach that suddenly goes to 0 at the same time as the stall/stumble. Look for anything that would be common to both the fuel relay and the tach(or ignition system) like power feeds from the ignition switch for example.

Thanks for the ideas...

Changed the relays... same thing.
I'm looking over the wiring now... will update later.
