Default Rustproofing. Worth it?

When I bought the car we opted to have rustproofing thrown in as part of the price. However, I've yet to take my car in and was thinking about cancelling it.

Is it worth it? It's $1000 on top of the total price of my car. Don't they rustproof it from the factory? I know Alaska is a little harder on cars than most areas (not as hard as say Minnesota or Ohio though) so would it be better to go with it? I intend to keep it for a long time.

They told me they actually go under the body panels and do it, and that it deadens some of the sound coming from the road. I also intend to install a nice stereo system in my subie so I wonder if this would help that at all as well.

I also intend to cancel my $2300 extended warranty. By the time I'm done with my car, there's no frikkin' way they're going to warranty it so why pay extra, right? I can always get more later.

What'cha think?

What is your definition of a long time? 4 years 6 years? Since you plan on keeping the car for a long time then yes you should do it. I haven't kept a car for more than two years. If I was planning on keeping the car for an extended period of time then I would do it. I don't see spending $1000 on a car that I'm getting rid of in a few years. The rustproofing will deaden some of the sound. If your going with a big system then you'll probably need more. Get rid of the extended warranty , I'll take my chances.

i did the same thing, well actually my parents did. they cancelled the rust proofing and the extended warranty.
we got the rust proof done at auto armor. they did a good job. it looked good when it was done, but after driving through all this snow and dirt it looks kinda dirty.

Not worth the money. Most new cars have a lot of rust proffing from the factory, IE galvinized steel panels. Your car comes with a waranty against rusting. Why pay more?

Just my 2 cents

The WRX has galvinized panels covering roughly 80% of it's body, basically everywhere except the roof as I understand it. Pretty serious rust-proofing for a factory effort.

I opted not to get rustproofing because it adds significant weight and is not required. If Anchorage threw prodigious amounts of salt on the roads, as in the midwest (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, etc.) I might think twice about it.

I agree that rustproofing is not worth it. But in your case for the stereo system and to help quiet it down and keep the rattles maybe a little less it might be worth it. But even then, alot less money spent on Dynamat would probably help alot more.

just my .02

Don't do it. You're probably going to finance that $1000, too. Over how many years? Go out and buy some Dynamat if that is your secondary concern. It'll be cheaper.
