Default Power Steering Belt Tension

Living in New England and the cold weather has finally come for good. I noticed a few weeks ago on cold start ups the car squeaks pretty bad for a while until the car is warmed up. it never did this in the summer or when the weather was nice. It does it also when i turn the wheel left or right but after a while goes away (usually once car is fully warmed up) so im assuming the power steering belt is lose and i am going to check today. but my question is how do i know how much tension to put on the belt and not over tighten it. any input would be helpfull. thanks

The belt should deflect a small amount when you press on it with your thumb midway between the pullies. Too loose and it will slip and squeal, too tight and the pump and alternator bearings can be damaged. If the belt doesn't deflect at all when you press on it it's too tight.
