Default A/C non-use question

Hi all,

I have a 2003 WRX bought new. By April, 2004 I had removed the a/c belt and the idler pulley, since I'm prone to head colds from using a/c, due to sinuses issues.

I've never turned the a/c on; however, I understand from two out of the many excellent threads that I read via the search, that I'm turning on the compressor every time I turn on the fan in defrost mode (which is the only mode/setting that I use). A couple posts stated that this is needed to keep the system lubed (and other stuff). My windows defog fine; this is my first car with a/c, and I couldn't buy a WRX without a/c, I was told, so I paid extra cash for nothing, happily enough for Subaru and the stealer.

Since the belt hasn't been on, I assume that for the last four winters, that every time I drive the car with the defroster on that the compressor's been free-spinning (unless it's very cold out, 20 degrees or colder was mentioned multiple times).

My questions are: is my assumption correct, that the compressor is free-spinning? Is the system pumping refrigerant around without the belt on? Is the compressor being oiled? Are the o-rings being lubed? Has this set of circumstances wrecked (or is it wrecking) anything like the dryer?

Thanks for any insight,

I think (not totally sure), it's the 04's separated the condensor from the inline drier, actually, look up unibomber as I think he directly swapped in the condensor from a later year in case he needs to replace the dryer later(?).

a/c belt off = no flow since it's used to power the compressor.

Ah, I remember (I think) that the compressor's got a clutch. So the a/c system is powered on, the clutch is "engaged" but there's no outside source to spin the compressor and pump refrigerant around in the system. So this could be bad news for all those pieces that I mentioned?

Thanks for connecting some dots for me, strohausii.
