Subaru Stars Liberty (legacy) 2.2 lt engine whistle

Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone has an idea about a constant single tone high pitched whistleing noise my engine is making particulary at idle and also when driving (between gear changes) and all the time when the air conditioning is on when the car is idling.

I have removed power steering and altinator belts with the noise still present.
and checked for anything lose without success.

If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreceate them.

Thanks very much

First thing that comes to mind for me is: Intake. Could it be a whistle from the intake?

Hi radio flyer,

Thanks for the response to my question. I have to admit i am not a mechanic but have reasonable basic mechanical knowledge.
my engine is an EJ22 (I think thats correct) and is non turbo, if it helps
I have some knowledge however but not alot about subarus as this is my first one, how would I check the intake?,
What are possible symptoms if its the intake?
I can not pinpoint the location of the noise when i move my head around the engine bay. but a friends discription is it sounds like a lose bolt or a bearing rattling/whistling?

Worn belts also make similar sounds.

Does the sound change with engine speed?

Where on the engine does it "seem" to be coming from?

If it where the intake it would make a WWWRRRR sound not a high pitch sound. Most high pitch sounds i have comes across are due to a bearing going out in one of the pullys or a leak in the carb seal. you can check the pullys by using a small hose and putting one in your ear and the other end by the pully.

Hi everybody,

In reference to you charlie III the sound is noticeable from 800 rpm to 1300 rpm and when i take my foot off the gas it dissappears untill the rpm drops to 850 rpm (minimum idle).

The high pitched sound is more noticeable when the engine is warm (this could be because it is idling higher im not sure)

I can not pinpoint where the sound is coming from, it appears to be on both sides of the engine bay and not sure if its louder in the front or the back of the engine.
Is there any way with a tool or something to work out where the sound is the loudest?

can the fuel injectors make a high pitched noise?

The timing belt has been recently changed and the belts seem in good condition also power streering, alternator and air conditioning belts are all ok, when i remove these belts the noise is still there, if i remove the timing belt left and right side covers the noise does not change (get louder).

Riosubagt it dose not sound like a wwwrrr sound
hopefully in the next few days i will try your trick of a hose near the pulleys to find out the noise they are making
I'm not sure what the carb seal is ?? is that the inlet manifold?

possibly iac valve......I had an issue where I replaced the thin metal gasket with a newer type, and I got a whistle......only thing I could think of was a resonance in the intake manifold with the new gasket.....
