Default 1999 2.2L Question

I'm considering buying a 1999 2.2L Legacy Wagon. How reliable is the 2.2L from '99. Is that a "Phase 2" engine.

I had a 1997 2.5L Legacy that had the head gasket problem and then completely gave out eight months after fixing the head gasket. In addition to the head gasket problem I had various oil leaks and a transmission seal leak.
I really liked how the car drove and handled which is why I'm now considering the '99 wagon. Am I tempting fate or is the 2.2L much better as seems to be indicated in a lot of posts here?

Thanks for any advice.

The 2.5s are the only ones that had that head gasket problem. I had a 99 impreza L with the 2.2 and beat the crap out of it with no problems.

my 2.2L 98 legacy is still holding up good at 125k, but its previous owner treated it real nice. the 2.2l is alot more sturdy then the 2.5, being no headgasket problem, and less horsepower so alot less wear on the engine.

Phase II EJ22s are rock solid. People just moan about hop up potential because of the single exhaust port heads and not the reliability of the engine itself.
