Default Thermostat Removal / Replacement-- Messy?

I've been having overheating problems in my '99 RS. After some investigation, I think its just a bad thermostat. I'd get it fixed under warrenty, but the closes dealer is about a twenty minute drive and I don't want to pay for a tow/ risk damage driving when I could replace a $15 part.

Anywhoo, when you take out or access the thermostat, does all the coolant come out with it? I know ours is located at the bottom of the engine block. I'm trying to determine if I can do this in my driveway.....any tips on how to?
