Default will i pass the smog test in california?

ok i have a question that i can't seem to find the answer to. i have an 03 wrx. i want to get the ECU tuned, but im afraid that if i do that then i wont pass the smog test here in california. is this true or will i still be able to pass with a tuned ECU???

I heard you can get away with just the stock downpipe meaning if you gut or get an aftermarket uppipe you will be fine. or if you want, you can go stage 2 with everything catless and when it comes times to get emissions get your stock downpipe installed before. its a lot easier than the uppipe which is good.

yes the exhaust system is still oem except for an after market muffler that was welded on the end. bought the car like that. would it change the read out of the smog test if the ecu was altered?

You should ask this question in your local forum section, more specific answers can be found.

also, even if you tuned your car with say accessport or even open source, you can always revert to stock, so i dont see you having any types of problems but i think stage 1 wont have any complications with passing smog. believe me, i am in the same boat as you, i just have stage 1, and have all my cats but i dont think smog will be a problem, good luck

It all depends how youre tuned. Many people can tune their cars to pass the sniffer with no cats at all, but that wont work in Cali where you have the visual inspection.

I heard the rule was changed for '03+ cars. Someone told me they won't have to get tested till 2012 or something like that.

you'll pass if you have no cel. iirc all the 2000 and up cars are obd2 tested. they wont test from your exhaust, an engine bay check is all. from exprience

Where and when did this happen?

They will look under the hood to make sure all of the emission parasites are still there. You don't need a smog till next year either by IIRC.

<---- has an '03 in CA never been smogged
