Default Porsche and Audi beef it out over the ‘RS’ badge

Quote:
Following the Audi TT-S we saw at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, Audi has plans to bring even a more powerful version of the TT to the roads by 2010. And while many of us have come to known the car as the TT-RS, the badging of the car is a subject of controversy over at Volkswagen Group.

According to the April issue of AutoCar, the new powerful execs from Porsche who have a large influence in the company put a halt on the title. Porsche says that the RS badge belongs to them and only them when it comes at the end of a name.

Meaning Audi can go ahead and name as many as models as wants with the RS badge as long as they have a number at the end of it (for example the Audi RS6 Avant).
“Porsche has the monopoly on the ‘RS’ suffix in the VW Group,” said a Volkswagen source. “Audi can only use it as a prefix, as in ‘RS6’.

We’re glad we’re not the big shots at Porsche, Audi or Volkswagen. There seems to be a lot of unspoken animosity there.

Doesn't sound like they "beef it out", more like Audi got shot down hard

Says the man with a 2.5 RS

Camaro RS??? As in "Rally Sport." The only thing Porsche has is "Porsche," nothing more. How many "GT's" have there been? Can one marque dub the "GT" as theirs?

Porsche is just worried the TT-RS would steal sales of the Boxter and Cayman. meh. So where's the "Cayman RS," Porsche?

It's about internal naming regulations in the VW group not about copyright infringement. It's as if sprite (owned by coke) wanted to used coke's polar bears in their commercials.

Matt30 got it right and the couple of posters before didn't really read the story - Porsche is just flexing their muscle and letting Audi know who is in charge.

I'd assume thats too smart and easy of a thing to do for such an overcomplicated type of company like Audi. Besides, with the TT-S, we cant mess up the the order of letters by moving that S and an R in front now can we Who really cares, when it comes down to it, people arent gonna decide whether to buy the TT-RS when it comes out because its called the RS-TT not the TT-RS

...lighten up. We all get the point of the story. It's that Porsche is proliferating LAME all over their precious AG.

I read it as any company can do anything with the RS badging they want....well...."except you VW, because we own you, and our affiliation with you just makes you better. So don't piss us off."

I'm in the UK & back in the day there was the Ford Escort RS2000 also, so that's another manufactuer that used RS.

But is Porsche going to stop calling their race car 911 RSR?

If only they were more concerned with whether or not to game diesel emissions risking losing billions and customers. Nah, RS is more trivial. Go with that.
