1998 Outback Legacy

Default Coolant Temp gauge not reading

I have a '96 Legacy Outback 2.5l. The coolant temp gauge sits on the needle at cold and does not move at all. Any ideas on fixing this problem, or would I be better off going with an aftermarket gauge?
