Help with making wires for AVCS
Does someone have a picture of what the finished wire looks like that i need to create inorder to run AVCS with jdm ecu.
i don't want to spend 200 bucks on IA kit, if i can make it myself for 50ish including buying the soldering iron. also, can anyone point me to the type of wire i need? After doing some research i know i need roughly 20 gauge high temp shielded wire. thanks, stas

I'm not entirely sure how to solve your exact problem, but it seems you are running into the same hurdles that us swapped guys have.
You need to get the wiring diagram for your vehicle and use BOTH the ecu pinout AND the diagram that shows all the wire connnects to get this to run. Unless someone you know has done this and can tell you, thats what it comes down too. Those are the breaks of DIY. Edit: As far as those connectors you ordered, those are used to re-pin female end connetors. You SHOULD solder the wires to them, however you probably can get away with just using some needle nose pliers and crimping them. I recommend soldering because i'm old school and solder everything in my car, can't tell you how many problems come from going the cheap/easy route. So basically you need to find whatever sensor from the engine that is used in the AVCS system, and then make your own female connector (using the connectors you bought for the wires) and then have them connected to whatever they go to on the other end. ie. ecu, other sensors, etc. I hope this helps, i know it's confusing, but the reason you're not getting alot of responses is because there are so many little details, it would take forever to explain, and not many people have the knowledge/skill to complete this. good luck. Edit2: As far as wire, you can use any STRANDED 20g wire, I do not know if the signals from the AVCS are sensitive enough that you need "shielded" wire. Just get some 20g teflon coated stranded copper wire (radioshack). Very few wires on an engine need shielded wire, however if you do, it will be harder and more expensive to find quality wire thats shielded. 99% of wires i've seen on cars do not used shielded cable. Mainly hi-fi audio equipment uses shielded cable. All shielded cable/wire does is keep surrounding electrical noise from interferring with the signal. So if say you have a hi-fi stereo, you can get "crosstalk" from the power section of your radio in our "amplifier" section. I'm trying not to get techincal, but i know there are some haters out there who will try to poke holes in this very very brief explanation. Last edited by DHRDAN; 05-15-2009 at 10:54 PM. |

just purchased 10ft of 20 gauge wire. sounds like it should do the trick. here's a description:
This shielded & jacketed aircraft wire conforms to MIL-C-27500 & replaces MIL-C-7078/3. It incorporates MIL-W-22759/18 basic wire and features a Tefzel insulation, a shield of tin- plated copper braid and a jacket of Tefzel. It is temperature rated to 150°C & voltage rated at 600 volts. Top quality wire to military specs. 22-16 gauges sold in 10 ft increments only. |

Awwww thats some quality wire. Where did you get it? I'm guessing it cost a bit, but none the less, it sounds like it's worth it. |

The circuits that need to be added that run to the right side of the motor need to be shielded. The shield is grounded to the ECU. Any good local electronic supply store should have four conductor shielded wire on hand.

Does anyone know how i can run the wires from the passenger side strut mount area, through the firewall, and into the area that holds the ecu?? I've looked all through there and the only grommet i found was on the driverside. any ideas?

you only need to run 4 wires from one plug on the right side of the engine to the ecu. On the left side of the engine, you will repin 4 wires that are already in your wrx harness for the tgvs, then you repin them at the ecu also. All you need is the connectors, do you have an old harness lying around that you can take the pins from? If the connectors you bought are correct you can use a crimp tool that is shaped like a "w". i have the tool, No soldering is needed!

anyone know where to source the actual connector?...the plastic piece that houses the pins
I don't need to buy an entire harness but just the connectors themselves. Thanks, Micah |

look at my post #8. I bought those connectors that i will crimp to the wires this weekend. I have studied how to set this up and in reality its easy.
THe difficult part is actually getting the four wires through the firewall. Thats what i was asking in post #14. Also, repinning might be tough because i'll have to figure out how to pull the pins out without breaking anything. |

If you make a small 4 wire harness all you have to do is tape it up then pierce it through the gromet with the main wiring harness. I repined mine, but it was around 4 years ago, but I dont think it was that hard, you just need to unlock the connectors.

the wires i have, have an other plastic wrapping that when stripped reveals what looks like some outter grounding wire and another plastic inner.
Once this inner wrapping is stripped, the conductor wire is revealed. What do i do with this outer grounding wire? I know i can gather it together and just twist it up, but then does it connect to something? |

oh sorry dude. I didn't buy the connector, but the pins that one would connect inside the connector. I think the best thing to do is to cut one off a car that's sitting in a junk yard.

yeah, in which case I may as well just grab the whole harness...
I need to take a closer look at the connectors and see if they are common with another style connector. Not too many sti's in the local junkyards (like zero) |

2. Remove guts from a Bic pen or similar that is large enough to side wires through. 3. Insert "tube" into grommet between existing harness and rubber of grommet. 4. Push wires through tube and pull to desired length. 5. Remove pen from gromment and slide down length of wire. 6. Add pins at each end. 7. Plug pins in. The shield from the wire must be grounded at the ECU. You'll want to trim back the outter plastic exposing the shielding lead and other wires. Fold the shield wire back, solder a regular bit of wire on and tape to body of wire. Solder ECU Pin to this wire and insert into ECU plug. Look at how other shielded wires are done if you are confused. |
