Default An archery thread

Any archery folk out there? I was hardly separated from my bow when I was a kid, and am just getting back into it w/ the wife. We picked up a cheap fiberglass longbow to start, then a friend had an older 40lb compound bow we're practicing with too.

Right now we're just having fun with it, but may be interested in doing some serious equipment and entering some competitions for kicks down the road. No huntin', though, but I might be interested in possibly overthrowing terrorist regimes in Southeast Asia, and I hear it's the right tool for the job.

Have fun.
I love me a nice compound bow...not a real fan of traditional long bows. I haven't used one in ~ 6 years.

Never felt real comfortable or got really accurate so I never tried to hunt with one.

Though if you're just plinkin about a crossbow is a helluva lot of fun

I'd never shot a compound before last week and was amazed at how accurate they are. At a distance I was struggling to hit the target w/ the longbow I was getting all my arrows within 1' with the compound. Pretty impressive. But, I like the challenge of the longbow, tbh.

Also, I'm kind of intrigued by Kyudo, Zen archery. Just found an introductory school in northern VT in September that I may try to attend.

The "break" in a compound bow coupled with a correctly set sight makes it tons easier than a longbow. After a day you should be able to use it with relative ease @ shorter distances.

Using a longbow effectively is a skill. Good on ya if you go that route.

I used to hunt with a PSE Firestorm bow. It was light, small and packed a great punch. Lot's of fun to shoot.

Actually that's what spurred my getting back into it. I was playing with the wife thinking "Gee... I have a back yard now... wtf am I doing inside playing this when I could be doing it for reals outside."

Funny that you started this thread. I was going to make my own. Just tested out a few bows the other day. Before that, I hadn't shot a bow in probably 15 years.

I used to shoot a compound bow and bow hunt when I was younger. I miss it. It's about time to get back to my redneck roots.

Signed up for that Kyudo school, taught by the former bowmaker to the emperor of Japan. Can't wait!

If you have the right tools and know-how, it is easy. Problem is, you don't have the right tools and the know-how requires experience.

Get an archery shop to do it to make sure it is done right. Nothing like having a compound bow let go at full draw to make you realize how much you like your face the way it is currently arranged.

A few pics from the kyudo retreat this weekend.

The shooting dojo, or eba as they're now to be called:

Me:

The wife:

One of my instructors taking aim:

Sensei Shibata XX:

Hat was given to him as a joke when the Malcom X movie came out. He apparently liked it so much he wears it all the time

Was a pretty amazing experience. Everything is very slow, very strict, and the form is everything. Hitting the target is considered just as good as not hitting the target, so long as your form is good. But, if your form is perfect, you should hit the target. It was probably 100' or so, targets were about 1' in diameter, and the better archers had about a 50% hit rate.

That is pretty cool looking. I've bowhunted since I was a young teenager. Started with a recurve and moved onto compound bows. That form looks quite dangerous though. It looks like one wrong move and you could lose an ear.
