Tires only, for stock rims. (225/55R17)

Valley and mountain conditions vary considerably. Work commute is 25 miles round trip, mostly freeway which is cleared quickly. Ski 30 + days a season in the local canyons, which receive 500 + inches of snow per winter. Canyon roads are plowed aggressively, but during storms, conditions can be heinous. Have it narrowed down to the WS 60's and the XI2's. Like the idea of longer tread life and better dry performance on the Xi's but don't want to give up much in the snow traction department. Any other tire I should consider? Also torn on road hazard...worth the bucks?
I could really use some input on this as well..
we dotn have quite the snow that he is talking about.. but i would like to be able to truck thru some crappy snow storms..

I was out in Toole a few months ago and got a first hand look at the terrain. Using info from locals, track friends and histoic records I think you should look at the X-Ice XI2 as well

i was recommended the dunlop sp winter sport 3d's... but it came up with

The following tire you have selected has a higher load rating than the vehicle's Original Equipment (O.E.) tires. This typically results in increased ride harshness, which some customers may find undesirable.

when i was in checkout... do you recommend a better winter tire for the 09 wrx.. or will this be fine? sorry i'm a tire tard and trying to get these ordered tonight

don't worry about the load capacity issue .. .it's basically lawyer speak letting you know that if all things are equal ( i.e. air pressure, vehicle load, ambient air temps, atmospheric conditions, etc. ) it will ride a little stiffer than a tire of a lower load rating.

If they are too stiff for your liking let a couple pounds of air out and you are good to go

I'm currently using contiextreme contact a/s tires on my stock wheels and they've been decent in the snow/ice up north. I recently picked up a set of 17x6.5in. steel wheels to use as a winter set (only mounted for ski trips) and plan on using 205 50 17 tires. I'm trying to decide if snow tires are worth considering.

I live in Phoenix, AZ but I often travel up north to snowboard in the winter. I have to travel 150-200 miles (one way) to get to the ski areas. Only about 50% of the distance could really be considered winter driving conditions - for reference, weather ranging from Denver to a Colorado ski resort. One of the ski resorts requires the use of chains or snow tires during storms at a checkpoint about 2 miles from the parking lot. This has always deterred me from going there during a storm (**** chains).

I would suggest the Pilot Alpin PA3 for your needs as is offers lower road noise than most and you will be driving quite a distance before being in the snow. They also wear pretty well, will get you through the chain control check points and up to the ski areas with ease

I generally drive about 150 miles per day, and usually hit the road early in the AM before the plows have been out in full force.

Thanks!

I really like the X-Ice XI2 in that area .. especially if you are out before the plow jockeys

First time ever buying winter tires, i need some guidance. I'm stuck between the General Altimax and the Dunlop Sport 3D. Not sure which tire to go with, the conditions here is mostly slush on the roads, with ice. But i do some spirited driving in the winter. But when it snows it snows! So i need a tire that is good on dry/wet pave, snow and ice. Any help? I'm completely unsure as what tire to buy, also looking for a relatively good deal. Since at dealers and tire retailers the Dunlop sell of 185-210, and the General 135-165. Also if you could respond by PM that'd be great!

Thanks Caleb

the Generals make alot more sense given the conditions you are describing
Thanks Luke! I actually went with the Generals! I'll make sure i write a thorough reviews for futur sales. So far on the Dry warmer pave they seem to squirm in the corners but i didn't buy them to rocket around. I need safety and security in the snow and rugged conditions that we get here. If you don't like the weather in the maritimes just wait 5 mins!

Tires only, going on the stock 16" wheels.

I am looking for a tire with decent handling and treadwear but also does very well in the snow. Sometimes it snows a lot here, and sometimes it doesn't snow at all. I am also looking for a tire which would do well in the soft sand, since I am hoping to get this car on the beach next summer. I know some of the rally guys run their winter tires off-road, but I don't know how well soft sand applies to this. I was going to get a set of General Grabber AT 2's, but I don't want to commit just yet to lifting my wagon and the issues of running such a taller, heavier tire all the time. Thanks!

I was watching a Rally not too long ago and the fast guys were running the Pirelli Sotto Zero which is a high performance winter tire

Luke, the closest size I could find on your site for the sottozero was 215/60/R16. That is a little taller than stock (205/55/R16). They are also a little on the pricey side. There was different Pirelli tire which did come in 205/55/R16, but I don't know if it was as good as the sottozero...thoughts?
posting this again because i am not sure if you check back on the old posts. if so, sorry. thanks.

yeah ... the Sotto-Zero is gone for the season. Pirelli just didn't produce enough of them. Second choice Dunlop Winter Sport 3D

Do mostly city driving, not much highway. Doesnt snow too much in Vancouver either.. should I go performance or the studless? I have 17x7 rims for winter, so I think 215/45/17 would be most suitable. Thinking about the PA3s, XIce, or the Winter Sport M3's, but I'm not really sure..

I have a question about the Michelin rebate (or others). I plan to order and ship to Point Roberts, WA. Can I claim the $50 dollar rebate available to Canada? If not, can I claim the $70 rebate and mail it to the same address as the place I shipped it too?

since you stated that you will be in the city with a majority of the time I would look into a performance winter unless you are planning trips to the mountains or will have to deal with a significant amount of icy conditions. For the performance tire I like the Dunlop.

Luke,

I have a set of dunlops on my stock wheels for summer and am was looking at all seasons for the winters/beginning of spring. Since I commute a lot and sometimes to Pitt (400+ miles) a few times and I would imagine on dry road that would wear them down pretty fast. Could you recommend a all season tire that will be ok in the snow?

I saw the Bridgstone Potenza G 019 Grid and the Dunlop SP Sport Signature looked pretty good all around

my persoanl favorite is the Bridgestone Potenza RE960

Hey Luke,

I think this is great what you're doing here man. Very helpful.

So for the best tire to consider, I know you probably saw my location and was like But the deal is that I have a set of BBS STi rims with summer tires on them and a second set of BBS STi rims I'm waiting to put winter tires on for the dozen or so 240 mile round trips up to Flagstaff I take each season for snowboarding

I want a tire that will be both safe to drive on the sometimes icy/snowy roads up there and I can have fun in a snowy field with, too. I like to have fun in the snow brutha! Been lookin at Blizzaks because they come highly recommended (as for which Blizzak would be best for me, I have no idea), but was curious what you'd recommend.

Oh, and if you could give me a quote shipped for the set you'd recommend that'd be great. My zip is 85307.

edit: fyi, I'm ready to buy, like, today

given your use of the winter tires I would probably go for the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3. If you want a Blizzak go for the LM60

shipping will be about $50 for the entire set of 4

Additionally, the following vehicles need their sensors registered at the dealership unless an OBDII tool is also used to put the vehicle into TPMS learn mode and search for the new sensors:

Chrysler Crossfire
Dodge SRT10 Viper
Honda
Hyundai
Infiniti
Kia
Lexus
Mitsubishi
Nissan
Saab 9-3, 9-5
Saturn Astra
Scion
Subaru
Suzuki
Toyota
So this does mean that we'd still need to visit the dealership, no? for the initial registration of the sensors - but that subsequent to that initial trip to the dealer, no future visits will be required (i.e. no re-visit to the dealer at the winter-to-spring switch-over, nor the next year, and so on)....

Default Performance Winter or All Season in Seattle?

year: 2003
make: Subaru
model: Impreza Outback Sport
location: Seattle
tires only or winter package: Tires Only

Currently have Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S (205/55R16 H91). I do a lot of snowboarding and these worked fine the first 2 years but I had a couple of slides last year -- not fun. I only want one set of tires, but am considering a performance winter tire -- like Dunlop Winter Sport 3D which seem to have some pretty good dry and wet (it is Seattle) characteristics to complement the better snow performance. Also considering Goodyear Assurance TripleTreds because of the center snow band. Whatever I buy it will be my only set of tires and I'd like not to have to buy new tires Every year .

Do you have any advice RE: the Pilot Exaltos vs the TripleTreds; or either vs. the Dunlop Winter Sport 3D? If I did go with the Winter Sports, am I looking at a new set every year or could I possibly get a couple of years out of them (I realize that is dependent on a lot of variables -- just on average ballpark type answer would be great)? Any other suggestions? I am up in the mountains about 2 times a week during the winter.

Thanks for your help,

Jimaco

if you only want 1 set of tires and you don't want to buy new ones every year look at the Potenza RE960 from Bridgestone

Hi Luke I had a look at the RE960's on the Tirerack site -- do you think these would be better in the snow than the TripleTreds? Or is there another reason you would recommend them -- Thanks! (The TT's seem to rate higher for all snow/ice conditions in the user survey)

FWIW, I'm on my second set of Goodyear Triple-Treds for our AWD mini-van. I run them year round and I really like 'em.

I also bought a set of Dunlop Winter Sports through this thread for our WRX last winter and I have no complaints there either.

If I were trying to pick between those two for year round use on a Subie, I'd be inclined to choose the Dunlops. You might not get as many miles on them, but I think they're a little quieter than the Triple-Treds and they seem to have less sqirm to them. They also feel a little more secure when driving aggressively on both wet & dry pavement (if you have occassion to do that sort of thing from time to time).

Just my 2 cents.

agreed but, the Dunlops will wear out real fast when used in the summer

Have 16' oem wheels.

I plan driving in adverse snow conditions. I always go snowboarding when there's enough snow fall to close roads, and my job requires me to report after/during snowfall for snow removal.

I just have Goodyear Assurance TT tires now that are getting down there on tread, figured I'd step up to some snow tires then get some summer tires in the spring.

Option 1

What tires do you recommend?

I was looking at 205/55-16 tires and also heard I can fit 195/60-16 tires on stock wheels and be about the same wheel diameter. They seem to be quite a bit cheaper.

Option 2
Also, I was thinking of getting dedicated rims for snow-tires so I can switch them out easily if needed. And put them on as late as possible, avoiding unnecessary wear.

Is there a wheel/tire package you would recommend?

The Sport Tuning Glide 15x6.5 wheels and 195/65-15 WS60's seem like a good deal for $684. Or is better to stick with 16" despite being more expensive?

Thanks,
Nick

I like option #2 .. .it offers the best results ... ease of change over, lower final cost, added tire life, etc.

^ Sweet! Thanks, Luke!

I'm using the "electrical-tape mod" with my wife's '09 FXT now, but when we move on to two vehicles with TPMS, I'll certainly invest in one of those tools.

I bought a set of studded General Altimax Arctics off of craigslist that I'm considering destudding since the amount of rain seen here is greater (usually) than the amount of snow (though last year was epic in terms of snow amount). I'm just curious what the expert(s) think. Leave the studs or remove them? I make a lot of mountain trips and Hood River is just one big hill. How much traction/control will be lost due to the studs on wet pavement compared to the amount of traction gained due to the studs on snow/ice?

edit: they were only used for one season and have good tread left

I would leave them in ... seems like too much of a headache to take them out for the nominal difference it will make

^ In the 2009 ADAC tests, for 2009, of H-rated winter tires, the WR G2 were rate at "1.7" for wear, with the 3Ds at a comparable "1.6" (lower-is-better scale).

What's strange is that from the pool of local experience (NE-Ohio regional Subaru enthusiasts) all pretty much agree that they've seen better treadwear out of the WR and WR G2.... Nevertheless, what kills the equation in this one is that I don't think that any of us have ever run the 3Ds throughout all seasons, and thus, are ill-equipped to make that assertion in any definitive manner.

Hey whats goin on i live in Grand Junction Colorado and am working in aspen this winter what do u think i should run i i need for four new tires.

Year:1999
Make:Subaru
Model:impreza RS
Localtion:Aspen/Grand Junction,CO

Grand Junction to Aspen as a commute??? that's like 140 miles, in the mountains, in winter . ... go with the traction offered by the Michelin X-Ice XI2 or the Blizzak WS60 with the XI2 being my first choice. It better be a killer job paying big $$$

edit: google maps says 129 miles but still

It can snow alot or a little but I drive about 60miles a day and alot of that is on the highway and also at night on unplowed or two tracks from the other cars driving. I also take quite a few snowboard trips and go to the U.P. a few times in the winter for family where they can have a few feet fall in a night. Im looking into studless snow and ice and the dunlpos graspic 3d's are what im looking to get. is this what sounds right for me?

I would go for either the Michelin X-Ice XI2 or the Blizzak WS60 . With that 60 mile per day drive I would lean towards the XI2

year: 2009
make: Subaru
model: Legacy 3.0R Ltd
location: WAAAY Upstate, NY (Canada to everyone else )
tires only or winter package: Package (preferably with a 17" rim, site only shows 18" options)

We can get a bunch of snow, but clean up is pretty quick and much of winter driving is on dry or wet roads (melted from so much salt use).

Thanks

and the sun goes down and all of that water turns to ice ... Blizzak WS60

Luke,

Wondering what to get next winter for an 06 TSX
year: 2006
make: Acura
model: TSX
location Northern, New Jersey
tires only or winter package: Tires only

Currently I have a set of Dunlop Wintersport M2s. However wondering if I should step up to a Blizzak WS-60 or stay with a performance snow.
Size will be 205/60 16

for all we know at this time the WS60 might be discontinued by then .... I would have a studless ice and snow tire on the car though
