Default Swapping STi bits into a 98 Impreza L Wagon? (and vice versa)

Friend has an 05 STi with 70k on it, he wants to swap engine, transmission, drivetrain into the L. He wants to leave the STi's suspension, brakes, wheels intact.

This kind of sent up a red flag for me, I know his 02 WRX wheels, rear drums, old ass front discs are NOT going to fit the 05 hubs, and the L parts will not fit in the STi.

So this is kind of a unique challenge we're facing. Let me know if this is possible, what is involved, and tell me if we should just say "**** it" and take ALL the parts off of the STi.

By the end of this whole process we hope to have two running cars. A 98 Impreza L Wagon-STi, and an "STi" with a 5 speed, and a 2.5 to be sourced elsewhere. The Wagon's old motor will be discarded. He plans to do all of the work himself. Thanks in advance.

...not sure why you'd want to put the 2.2liter into the impreza shell. If you wanted to end up with 2 driving cars, why not sell the STi and put the proceeds towards making your wagon incredibly baddass (I refer you again to the above link ) and buying a beater Impreza for $2500?

You'd have money left over. I can tell you from personal experience that putting an impreza tranny on a Gen2 Leggy will require you to replace lots of suspension parts on the Leggy. Control arms, bushings, etc.

Good luck out there...

It's an Impreza wagon... Impreza L.. .Sorry I left that out of the OP.

I can't get into the reasons for making a drivable neutered STi, call it "optimism" and faith in the belief that there's a sucker born every minute?

Also, slight revision. The STi will get an N/A 2.5 that a nearby shop happens to have on hand. The 98 engine would render the car smog-illegal.

Anywho, onwards and upwards. Don't be concerned about whether it's logical or even wise to do any of this, we're just looking for guides, any information we'll need to get the STi parts into the 98 Impreza L Wagon.

i have a 2007 Subaru wrx and i blew the 5 speed last may with 370 wtq it was only a matter of time over the last 11 monts I have managed to get Exedy stage 1 clutch,Exedy Lightweight flywheel, 2006 Sti 6 speed Transmission, Sti driveshaft, Sti r-180 rear diff, Custom Chromolly axles from the driveshaft shop and know all that i need is throughout bearing and trani bolts and shifter linkage. to make a long story short I have financially exhausted my bank account and am looking for the full 2006 sti shifter linkage assembly because the transmission I bought didn't come with it because It came out of a 2006 wrecked sti. I called my local Subaru dealership and they want over 500 for the shifter linkage all the bushings nuts and washers etc...and i am not trying to pay that kind of money
