![]() Hey guys, I'm having a JDM EJ20 (from an 05 WRX) swapped into my WRX after having an engine problem, and I'm just looking to get some specs on it.
I know it's still a 2.0L open deck, and makes 246chp instead of the 227chp out of the USDM. I believe redline is the same, but I'm unsure. It also has AVCS heads, so I was wondering if it was worth it to get a JDM ECU or get a standalone down the road to support this. I remember hearing something about a higher compression ratio, and was wondering what that would do for my numbers. I currently have a gutted stock UP, Bosal DP, and Bosal catback, and a TXS unichip that I will possibly be hooking up soon. So anyone that has any true specs for this motor, post 'em here please ![]() Thanks, Chris

![]() It doesnt have a low compression ratio, it has a slighly high compression ratio. 9:1 . I have a MY02 JDM WRX EJ205. Your other specs are correct, though I was told 250chp. Redline is whatever the WRX is (7000-7200? Not sure I'm comming from a 2.5RS).
And yes AVCS heads. I got a JDM ECU with mine, so I'll be using it. Keith |

![]() Keith, just found out about the compression, and edited the post. Is it any more responsive to mods with the higher compression or no?

![]() Honestly. I'm not sure yet. My swap is still in the process of being finished (stupid wiring
![]() I would think with the higher compression ir would allow the turbo to spool faster and require less boost. But I'm still a n00b to turbos and what not. |

![]() I though I had heard that the JDM ej20 has a redline of something like 8500, and that is why it is so appealing to us?

![]() ah, good call on the jdm wrx motor. I'm not sure why more people don't get them instead of rebuilding ej205's, considering the price that they go for. The compression is 9:1. They have cast or hypernautic pistons, not forged like the sti v7. I believe the pistons have the same construction as the JDM v8 sti. The heads have avcs, which means a jdm ecu controls them. AVCS is the shiz. You want it. Get a jdm ecu to run them. redline is 7200 on the motor. so you know, avcs will lower spool by 3-500 rpms when tuned. It is a solid motor, and a nice performance bump over the standard WRX motor. Great motor for the stg 4 guys. the comp ratio will be fun. Get a reflash for 93 octane and a vf series turbo and enjoy most of what the STi motor is, without the 8k redline.
Hope this answers some questions. I A performance sells a premade avcs harness. I wired my own and it took about an hour, and I'm not wiring savvy. you could probably use a jdm sti ecu, somewhere could flash it for you. good choice on the motor. you should be paying between 16-1900 max for the motor, with low milage. If I can answer any other questions, let me know. H. |

moss, question for you. I believe they are capping a hose or something to do with a coolant line in the rear of the motor near the flywheel. Is there any issue with this, or is it supposed to be hooked up somewhere? |

![]() Your question is years old, but for those wondering, the EJ20x/EJ20y
has big port heads with quad avcs. The bigger port in this pic is that of the Ej20Y. The other is the USDM STI 257 ![]() Buy the heads off a Ej20x if u get it for cheap, then slap on a build bottom end and make power. Rev to 7500, this is redline for ej20Y |

![]() They actually come with a td04 HL turbo which is slightly bigger than the usdm models. Dont want anyone misinformed from previous posts.

![]() As long as you are using a USDM ecu you can run the accesport. This would mean that you aren't running the avcs as JDM ecus or standalones are the only option for it. I dont think a JDM avcs ecu would be tunable with the AP, pretty sure you would need to find some specialty tuners to use opensource. Try and google "JDM subaru tuning"

![]() I'll chime in here.
I have a jdm avcs motor in my wagon. Got it cheap. Did not get an ecu, so i'm running the stocker. I deleted AVCS by using the cam gears from my usdm motor. Valve covers are different. had to order the jdm valve cover gaskets. Turbo is the same td04-13t. The water pump is also different. Used the USDM Kit and capped off the port going to the oil cooler. My motor does not have one. I kept the jdm intake manifold, just had the car reflashed to ignore the tgv's that werent there anymore. exhaust manifold is different too. kept the jdm unit. power was identical to my stocker after getting it tuned. around 230 whp or so. |

![]() I have a JDM EJ205 with single avcs I imported through a ebay seller with less then 50xxx yada yada.... After contacting several tuners in California Including Cobb Tuning about using a Access Port for the motor, they highly recommended NOT running a Cobb Acess Port. They told me to run a opensource tune and get a base map off of a tuner (which i did through Torqued Performance) because of the difference in compression ratio and the new sensors involved in the avcs motor. The tuner recommended purchasing if i could a avcs harness and ecu to reap the benefit of the avcs which im in search of now.... I was able to install the motor WITHOUT swapping cam gears OR intake manifold like i had previously read in another thread, and run a usdm harness and ecu and it runs fantastic. I did the standard replacement of the timing belt, pulleys, water pump and thermostat. I have not got it on the dyno so as far of loss in power or gains I cannot tell. Hopefully i will have a response soon.....
