Why you bringing "reasoning" to this thread?

As always, I'd be out for a meet during the week.

I am, however, meeting a nice fellow in NH on Saturday to purchase a transmission off of him. '06 5 speed with 40k on it. Let the build begin.

Matt, fix the rust in the wheel wells first... make the transmission worth while and keep the car surrounding it in one piece!

Yea yea, I know. I talked with the body guy about it. I wasn't thrilled with his answer, but whatever.

Ian, yes, I'm looking into gearsets. Not going the PPG route as I still haven't found the elusive money tree, but I'm looking at upgraded gears/ratios.

then why are you buying an 06 gear box? (esp a working one, at that)

you'd be better off just going with a legacy gear box/gears

Thanks for the body fix info guys, I'll take that into consideration. Ian, I bookmarked that link. That's good stuff!
As for the gearbox, I think i got a good deal at $725. I have since learned that the final drive for the differential is different between the '02 and '06. That being said, if I'm going to be upgrading gearsets to either Sti (5sp) gears or RA gears, I'll get a new matching (to the '02 rear diff) final drive ratio front diff gear, and have them installed all at the same time.
That was a total brain hemmorhage, if its confusing, sorry.

Matt, you could always go find a junker that has good rear quarters and have some fun cutting that away.... then you don't have to fab your own piece.

Yea, however, most junkers got that way with either age or rust. Its a common place to have rust collect, so it might be a lot of searching with no end result. I'll keep it in mind though. I'm more concerned with keeping it running/running well. Rusty wheel wells aren't going to keep it off the road, ya know.

the heads and the clutch are literally the last of major spending spree....

I have the Dom 3 turbo, 850cc injectors (installed already), Spearco TMIC (installed already), EBCS(installed already), Walbro 255(installed already), waterpump, timing belt and I'm getting the clutch kit, and heads. At the very least, I still need a full gasket kit. I want to get new timing cover pulleys as well, eventually headers and in up-pipe and external wastegate, then its a few suspension upgrades and I'm mainly done short of making sure the body stays in tact.

So I priced out what I had mentioned. I've backed out of that deal, since it will be way over my budget to get that into my car.
I've got a few offers out there on used 02 transmissions, so we'll see what happens with those.

they've been on hiatus since people decided to be lazy, cheap bastards... but apparently have plenty of money to waste on cars

Matt, you shoulda hit me up before, I didn't know you were looking for a transmission. I've researched like every option that exists. You could still just put in the 06 tranny and rear diff, and benefit from stronger/newer gears, longer rations, and better MPGs (slightly).

But if you are just going to build it, then you probably have more options sticking with an 02-05 case. The Legacy gears are a very popular one-step-up upgrade. RA are popular, but I've seen many reviews saying they really aren't any stronger. Just go over to the transmission FAQ and read your eyeballs out before making any final decisions.

did you see this yet Matt? not a bad deal if, if you were gonna spend $750 for just a tranny... and I'm sure you coudl talk him down a little.

Well if anything ends up happening just post it or PM me. The weekly meetings in the Reading area are a bit far for me during the week (school/work, early early mornings). I'm sure in the summer stuff will pick up again, but I'd like to do a meet before then too, I mean the weather lately has been way better than we've had in years... or ever really.

Ian, I saw that thread thanks. I've got an offer out for another transmission from an '02 that's much less than what I was looking at for the '06 one. We'll see what happens.
Vaughn, i just started to really look this week. Bad timing I guess.
