I met Will back in 2005, the first year I started autoxing. He introduced me to all the people in subaru autox community in the South East I know today. He spent a bunch of events codriving with me in my car, helping me to wrench, sourcing parts, and encouraging me to go to events. There was no event too far to drive back and forth in one day (even if it meant convincing me to go to highlands night series events in the summer from Blacksburg, VA). I had the opportunity to drive with him, John, Steven and Jane back in 2005 at my first solo nationals. And if someone was being stubborn or retarded I will always remember his *sigh*.

He was always a bit crazy (aren't we all?), but had an absolute heart of gold. He'd do anything for anyone - especially if it involved subaru's. And he always stuck with something until the very bitter end, and never gave up (aka "I found out a way to put more castor in your RS. .. it'll make it fastAR!!!"). I can't fault him for any of that. Just an all around good dude.

RIP WJM.

I remember...

While removing my intake manifold, I had to use the "phone a friend" option when I got stuck. Uncle Scotty came over and we got quite a bit more done, but then we BOTH got stuck. We just couldn't get the loose intake manifold to completely come off the car, and couldn't figure out what the heck was holding it on.

"Phone a friend" option 2 was Will. He said he was just finishing up at SOJ (Saturday), and would stop by on his way home. He propped my hood up full vertical so that he could climb inside the engine bay. Then, standing on my camber plates, inside my garage, he said in a very professorial way, "This is the technical part of intake manifold removal. Hand me that crobar."

(Still makes me smile)

RIP Will.

Well I wasn't going to post on this because I only ever talked to Will maybe 6 times but I got a funny one so I might as well share it..

After installing my brand new KW V3 coilovers that I impatiently waited 2 months for KW to build and ship to me I drove to SoJax for an alignment from the famous master tech Will. After the alignment I took it for a drive and was amazed at the dramatic improvement. I swung back around to ask him why my springs popped when I was turning at low speeds.. his exact words were, "Well, that's because KW's suck. I'd rather have a set of $800 megan's."

Mind you I had just spent $1800 on these things!! I was very

While I'd still beg to differ with his opinion there is no doubt he knew his Subaru's.

I would like to hope his little girl grows to know the kind of man her father was throughout his life and not base her opinion on one big mistake he made. I am saddened for her loss. I can't imagine how dark of a place a person has to be to take themselves away from their child this way.
Very sad indeed.

He was always looking for a way to get more caster in my Camaro too.

And I remember the MAF thing with all the straws. What the heck was that supposed to be? Anyone remember?

I remember when Will showed up at SOJ and the first day I had met him. Meh....just another guy....but then I found out he was "the" guy, and the only guy, I wanted working on my STi. From then on I made sure to request him for any work. I got to know this young kid that was so bright and personable. He always took the time to explain to me exactly what was needed...and I learned a thing or too from him along the way.

Will came to my rescue (along with Bill and other Subaru friends) when I wadded my STi and needed to get it back in shape. He spent time "after hours" getting me back on the road. Over the years I could always count on him for anything the STi desired. I remember calling him on his cell and rolling up to the shop and having him help me out and back on the road in minutes sometimes.....diagnosing overboost, weird noises, whatever it was, I could count on Will.

I could return the favors by loaning my landscape trailer to Will so he could complete his move down to FL....bring a variety of Subaru parts and stuff. He and Ashley and their daughter came by one time when he came by to pick up the trailer..... I never suspected that this was on the horizon.

I called him up 8 months or so back when I saw an angry facebook post by him (you may have seen it). He told me what was going on and and I tried to console him and that he could call me anytime. We talked maybe one more time after that. Last text I have from him was at Thanksgiving when I wished him well and he said thanks and the same to me. It's still on my phone.

I had been thinking of him recently and was going to call him...maybe do lunch... but the days flew by and now he's gone. Wishing I had called him... I'll miss him.

Ah the arguments we had over caster...

I think the straws were a way he felt would increase air velocity/horsepower.

Default For Will

Hey everyone,

As Will's sister I just want to say thank you. Many of you I don't know and have never met but the out pouring of love and emotion I have read from the Subaru community is incredible. My mom, dad and I are speechless at hearing how far he has touched the community one way or another.

I have created a Facebook page in memory of him, ( http://www.facebook.com/groups/176959995753181/ ) and I would love for you all to be a part of that and share your memories and any and all pictures you may have for my not only myself and my parents but for the rest of my family and his other friends who may have lost touch over the years.

Thank you again so much.

There's a lot more outpouring in Atlanta as well. I miss him terribly and feel lost knowing that he's not around any longer.

RIP Will.

That is most definitely a Will way to go about it. I can't even remember how many times I saw him do similar things to other Subarus, though not necessarily to intake manifolds.

I'm inserting images inline into the thread for those who may not notice the link I posted above.

Here, Will is undoubtedly talking about the superiority of the DL wagon at the end of an autox day. CCR event at Knights, in March of 2004

Will coming to help Dave McKenzie at the end of the day. Same autox, CCR at Knights, March of 2004

Will and the wagon at a Subaru meet in Chapel Hill, October 2004

Will didn't just autox the wagon; here's the infamous RX at the 2005 CCR Novice School

2004 Dragon meet; the back of the GL wagon. Probably about the most sporting photo of it that I have

This is circa 2004 at the Dragon. Will of course sporting his signature hair and what else...but a Subaru shirt

It has been a long time since I posted here, but there are a number of folks I met here, many of whom I would consider some of the best friends I have ever had in my life.

Will was one of those.

Like many of the others, I am a bit unsure when exactly I first met Will. It was most likely at one of the HSCC autocrosses. He became like a younger brother to me. Will moved in with Elizabeth and I and took his first job at a Subaru dealership with Prestige, where I worked as well. We commuted to and from work together the entire time he lived here, and in fact, we ended up spending most of our time together. As you can imagine, those of you who know us and know that we both shared the traits of stubborn and opinionated, this led to an occasional disagreement, but none of those harsh feelings ever lasted, and regardless of the distance between us, we remained close.

As I started typing this, I had all these thoughts of things I wanted to say, but those thoughts have all been washed away by my flood of emotions. I am so sad at the loss of my friend. I am so angry at myself for not being a better friend to him, for letting him know that both Elizabeth and I loved him like he was part of our family.

He was a fine young man when I first met him, and he grew into an even finer man.

Matthew told me about this last night.

I know that we met Will sometime around 2003 or 2004. I used to ask Matthew if somehow Will was his slightly crazy, illegitimate son as they both have a strange passion for old Subarus. I know after we moved, Matthew and I have lost touch with many people from the SE, but we have happy memories of our times. My thoughts and prayers are with Will and his family.

I never post on here anymore but had to say a few words...

I never really knew Will too well, but the times we met I could tell he was a great guy who loved his work and went out of his way for just about anyone he encountered. He was also a pioneer of sorts with the EA engine and pushed that damn thing to failure and greatness more that anyone I know.

RIP buddy, I know there is no EPA/ DOT up top so go crazy on the JDM goodness... once we all get there we'll be glad to help.

Amazing how bad news brings people out of the woodwork...

hey everyone... A lot of you were closer to will than I was, but I remember meeting him on several occasions.

Sad to hear this news. I only met Will once I believe quite a few years ago but we managed to be in many of the same technical threads on here, and I could always tell he was one of the "good ones" always willing to share his knowledge and expertise. Condolences to his family and good friends.

Subaru Stars

I'm sitting here reading these posts, and I find myself crying again.

Like many others, I'm not sure exactly when I met Will, but I know it was when I was still living in Greenville, SC, well before I ever moved to Atlanta. I remember hanging out with him many times at Subaru events and autocross weekends in Asheville, Charlotte, and elsewhere. He couldn't have been more than about 18 or so at the time, if I haven't screwed up my math too terribly.

Will was one of the most genuine and generous people I've ever known. I don't think he ever fully realized the value of his friendship, his time, and his impact on other people, but he was an amazing person to be around.

It's hard to articulate what I'm feeling right now, but my relationship with Will was something like having a brilliant younger brother, who occasionally drove me insane. I have great memories of him, from the early days when his hair was in full wacky 'fro mode, to the time I knew him best in his early 20s when he really grew into himself.

I remember when he lived with Matt and me in Atlanta, we used to sit up at night having retarded arguments about technical stuff, he used to drive me crazy sometimes but we had a huge amount of mutual respect and love. For me, he was particularly fun to be around when he was aggravated or frustrated with some automotive issue, because I loved brainstorming with him. And also, rather wickedly, I loved playing the straight-faced devil's advocate to every random topic that would come up, whether automotive or sci-fi or cultural or political. I know it made him nuts at times, but through every heated discussion we both usually had smiles on our faces, because it was one of the ways that we connected best.

I loved collaborating with him, when he worked for us at TopSpeed we would often noodle through technical challenges together, with each of us making stream-of-consciousness suggestions until we figured out the best way forward. It was one of the best working relationships I've ever had, even when we were occasionally frustrated with one another for whatever reason. It was at some point during his time working there that I think he really transformed from a "professional tinkerer" into a serious mechanic. He learned to slow down, and respect the process, and execute things cleanly. Never slow in action, of course! He was always a blur of activity, but his process became much more deliberate and I think it became a sort of meditation for him. His love of the speedwrench was part of that immersion, and I loved to see him in action with it.

Will's passing has really floored me. I just want to punch him on the arm and shake the **** out of him and try to get it through his stubborn head that he was loved. I did it more than once when he was living with us. And now I won't ever have that chance again, and it just kills me.

I'm basically a poster child for those of us that knew him and cared for him, but didn't make the effort to stay in touch the way we should have. I have thought about Will often, and fondly, and wondered how he was doing with his family and his new phase of life in Florida, but I didn't do what I should have to let him know that. I think a lot of us are suddenly realizing that of each other... I had a long talk with Kent on the phone on Wednesday and I think there are a number of us that will reconnect through this. If Will's death did anything positive at all, maybe it will serve to save and renew great friendships that otherwise may have faded away forever.

To give everyone a heads up, Matt and I have been talking about putting together a large event again at the Dragon, in the form of a Will Maham Memorial. It's my hope that we may be able to get many of us that knew him well back together again for one big bash to celebrate his life and his friendship. The intent will be to raise money (hopefully a lot of it) to put in trust for little Charlotte's college education. I want her to know, in some small way, how much her dad meant to all of us. I'd love any thoughts and input on that, if anyone would like to help.

My best to all of you, and to Will's family, and to all who knew and loved him. He will be deeply and sorely missed.

^going off Porter's statements, we're already in talks with Fontana Village and a few other resorts in the area. Give the potential amount of people going, I feel it's best to go back to Fontana as they have, by far, the largest amount of space for the group we'll have.

We're trying to find the best time that would fit everyone's schedule, as well a time that fontana will have a minimal amount of people staying there.

I've been indirectly talking with his family (through Jonathan) and they are truly grateful and definitely want to be there for this event. More details will come as we get them.
