Fastest overall, fastest on course 1, fastest on course 2...

And way more fun to rallycross than the '98 2.2L wagon.

"Stage 2" power, suspension stock except for WRX rear springs, brand new 235/45/17 Bridgestone RE970's.

Thanks Anthony! I only ask because I've now read all 102 pages of awesomeness and I saw a lot of subies running stock wrx suspension or swapped out wrx springs/shocks even through some rallyx courses. Also, I've heard mixed things but do strut spacers like the subtle solutions require any other parts? I've heard those and some grabbers are all you need. Others say forester trailing arms. I don't have a clue haha.

Took my 87 GL wagon out for a day at stave lake. This is a dammed lake so the water level drops and it becomes a mud flat.

Stock WRX suspension is fine for RallyX, unless it's totally shot.

Spacers typically don't require any parts other then maybe longer studs for the top mounts if their a significant lift, and then they usually come with the spacers if their needed. That and maybe secondary camber bolts. Again depends on how big of a lift you go for.

The way I see it, there are two somewhat distinct categories of off road use for Subaru's. There's the guys that want to run their car in RallyX, or Rally. And then there's the guys who want to use them for more off road trail type of off road. The two can converge somewhat, but depending on which is more important to you, there's two different approaches to setting up suspension for it.

RallyX:

You don't need tons of lift. In fact, from what I've seen, the guys going for big lifts are usually the one's that end up greasy side up. Stock height, or 1-2" of lift max. You can get away with stock struts if their not shot, that or I also have some killer RallyX spring and strut combo's that work out awesome for RallyX and light off road. Generally you'll just need an alignment after, possibly camber bolts depending on the lift.

Off-road (in the more traditional sense):

Guys looking to do trails, or deeper mud and stuff. The folks that are looking to use their car's in the same places you'd find trucks normally. These folks are going to be the one's shooting for big ground clearance and in turn more substantial lifts. 2"-3" plus range, and are going to want to run big off road tires (grabbers etc...). These folks usually running Forester take off struts and springs, sometimes spacers for even more lift. To really do this right, you'll need Forester rear trailing arm brackets, as well as some of the body spacers and brackets the Forester has stock. This is to correct the rear wheel geometry, and the spacers take some of the strain off your CV joints.

What class do you plan on running in RallyX? I'm not sure how the grabbers would class you, but I suspect they might put you in prepared. In which case you'd be better off running proper gravel tires.

Love the light bar and winch. Now you just need some proper tires.

Beautiful cars. Lookin for something for my 04 wrx. Damn thing came with Cobb springs so i scrape on even the smallest speed bumps. And i was wondering if anyone has any experience with the skid plates from team illuminata (sp?) they look pretty sweet and beefy

I can help you out with a suspension set up more suited to dirt driving, and off highway excursions/rally cross.

If your interested shoot me a PM and I can help get you sorted.

A few from the Glen Helen Rallyx this past weekend.

Even managed third place. The black WRX in the back ground was the class winnner (prep4) and our other friend finished second. I can post some video later once I get it uploaded.

How are those tires on the pavement? Or is that an off the trailer pic?

Their loud haha. Their actually soft compound gravel tires, and driving on pavement is pretty bad for them. They just get too hot and start chunking. I did actually drive home on these though after last event. Their a already VERY used set that I got real cheap off a buddy, figured I'd run them for a few events while my new gravel tires come in. Since my new tires should be in before the next event I just drove home on them. I was exhausted after the event and too lazy to swap them haha

Anyway, here's a clip from I believe one of my better runs. I edited the video in youtube, but for whatever reason it seems to want to play in the non edited 3:30 second version here. You can watch it in youtube to see the shortened version so you don't have to watch me waiting in line haha

My friend Thomas actually ended up taking the win that day in our class. The vid from I believe his quickest run that day. You can see my car taking off in the beginning of the vid

too bad you aren't closer, we could trade the suspension. last year bought a setup with lowering springs, sold that and bought an 04 forester suspension. now want to go lower again.

Wow, that's a lot of cones lining the course. We just use a single cone with a pointer to mark each apex, and sometimes a gate to force people to drive through a certain (safe) area. Way less physical labor that way.

Yeah, I've seen some videos of courses from your region. I think the idea with all the cones is to prevent "lost cars" on course. There's very few physical things at that course to visually distinguish where your at sometimes.

That being said, I'd be fine with fewer cone's, each one of those suckers is 2 seconds haha. You really have to keep the car reeled in to avoid tagging a bunch.

I've noticed that the more cones you use, the more people tend to get lost. If you design a course that flows naturally from one turn to the next, and there are minimal cones to sort out on the way there, it's a lot easier to figure out. It also causes some people to drive "cone to cone," which really kills their times... but not everybody can be a winner.

I like to use as few cones as possible - for example, when I design autox courses, my "Chicago boxes" usually consist of three upright cones with a pointer on each of them. Of course, that usually confuses the autoxers.
