Default Porsche Eyes Second Sedan Model: Report

For a company with finite resources, we’re guessing that Porsche must have some positively schizophrenic meetings on future products. After previous indications that Porsche was favoring high-end models for addition to its portfolio, now comes word that the Stuttgart automaker may be considering a sub-Panamera sedan.

So says Automotive News (subscription required), who cites a report from German publication Auto Bild. The new sedan, code-named Pajun, would slot into Porsche’s lineup below the current Panamera sedan, giving it a competitor to the Mercedes-Benz E Class.

Pricing for the Pajun is said to be in the 65,000 to 100,000 euro range ($84,100 to $129,400), which would actually make the base model more expensive than the current base Panamera. Then again, European pricing doesn’t translate directly into North American pricing, so the Pajun could hit the market at a price lower than indicated.

The Pajun, if it exists, would become the sixth model in Porsche’s lineup. As expected, Porsche is very non-committal on the subject, saying only that there are “many ideas for a sixth model,” but that “decisions had not been taken.”

From a financial perspective, the Panamera sedan has been a huge success for Porsche, as has its Cayenne crossover. The Cayenne’s success has prompted a second Porsche crossover model, the Macan, so it stands to reason that a second sedan is also under consideration.

Unless, of course, Porsche decides next week to pursue development of the sub-Boxster Project 551 roadster.
