2005 WRX STI

Default DCCD setting for autocross

Hey everyone. I've searched this but never really got a definitive answer or opinion. I have an 05' STi and I am running an autox event this weekend. Please correct me if I am wrong but from what I understand is that the DCCD in auto reacts faster than 04' because of a steering input sensor, but slower than than the 06' because they are never fully open. So for an autox event in an 05', what is the best setting for the DCCD? The conditions will be dry and mild temperatures. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

I set mine in the first notch and felt quicker. Of course, it was my 4th run and I was just about familiar with the track. Usually you get 6-7 runs...put it in auto for a couple, then the first notch for a couple...then report back.

I would say 6-7 runs is definitely not the norm - I'm used to 3 or 4. Depends on how big the club is.

With that said, I normally leave mine in AUTO. (I have an '06 6MT in my car with a Spiider controller.) Today was a wet event, so I tried full lock on my 3rd run, and full loose on my 4th run, just to see the difference. Unfortunately, I lost ABS on my 4th run, which completely blew the run, so I wasn't able to draw any conclusions.

For a stock DCCD I say Auto also.

I've got a Spiider controller too on my swapped GC and I run it in auto, but turned 1 notch from full aggressive. I get a fair amount of over steer with it less, but I also haven't played with it much this season.

But today we did run a VERY tight course, and I believe I did have some issues with binding.

For 06+, definitely leave it in auto. For 05-, it depends. The basic advantage of the controllable center diff is that it can be opened up when off throttle to allow the front wheels to dig in and tighened up as necessary on corner exit to maintain good balance of accelleration and steering. The DCCD controller in 05 and older cars is very slow to respond and tends to throw the car sideways on exit when the diff finally engages. I spent a few events going back and forth between similarly prepped 05 and 06 STI's, and I tended to like the 05 in manual mode set 2-3 clicks from locked (meaning 2-3 clicks down from the top in the cluster). It allowed the car to exit more cleanly, but caused a bit of understeer on entry. It was pretty course dependent. It's not going to amount to much time on course if you drive it right, but it can make around 0.3-0.5 second difference when you find the right setting for the course.

The 06+ just work like magic in auto mode, as they respond much more quickly and have steering position sensors which smooth out the action very well.
