If you authorized your MacBook to use iTunes the serial number and/or some other unique hw id may be among your account details.

Thanks guys. First off, I'd like to apologize for the delay - been crazy busy working 14+ hours a day... How can I be such an ******* with building up the suspense, and then disappearing!!

Second, I only told them its a "police matter" because I had called, emailed, and texted them multiple times without any response for days. The second I texted that, got a reply within minutes. I also have multiple friends in on it with their phones, so Im fine.

Great call with the MAC address. I'll check that later when I get home. I recently moved and lived in a city 2 hours from where I got it stolen, and now 5 hours away and in another state, so there is no way they can say they "connected to it once". I'll check iTunes again too, but haven't found anything so far.

I do also have the upgraded RAM packaging information as well, so if it did come down to me having to prove it was mine, I'm sure I can trace the new RAM inside it too.

And I do have it on iCloud and findmymac, but it hasnt been turned on since being stolen. My guess is that it was wiped right away.

Lastly, I got into an awesome convo with them via text message earlier today. Basically it was me calling them out, and them getting angry at me, saying I have the wrong number. First they left a voicemail saying they got a new phone a week ago, and when I said I got a call from them 2 days ago, he texted saying they got the new number yesterday. Hmm.... Anyways, I'm at work now, but will post pictures of the convo later today, since I know how much you guys like them pictures

We don't care about pics of the convo. This isn't Reddit.

Cool, good to hear you're still working towards getting it back.

Also, have you ever done a Time Machine backup? It's possible some of those files may contain your hardware config in a plist file (as far as MAC address, etc) which you would be able to retrieve and prove that this machine is yours.

By the time you figure out what to do, your computer and other stuff will be sold. Stop wasting time and have a friend set up a buy.

Fine, no pics for you, Harv. Pssh...

I may have done a backup, but that would be a very long time ago. This is embarrassing, but I just graduated with a CS degree, and not backing up my computer regularly is just plain idiotic. Especially when I use it for work every day. Many of my important websites were backed up on my server though, thankfully.

I did have an external hard drive, but was missing the power cord for it. I actually got a new cord for it too, about 5 hours before having my computer stolen. So, a note to everyone reading this, please go back your stuff up, because all I ever said was I need to do it, but always put it off...

Lesson learned.

Lots of great ideas floating through this thread, but your first step is to recontact the police department who took the case. See what they are classifying the crime as (if it's a crime), state laws are different per state, that's why I ask. But if it enough property to push the incident to a Felony status than my guess is someone other than the lower level patrolman is working the case. If an Investigator/Detective has the case, he'll be more than willing to put it to bed, regardless of the level you believe it is at. Meaning if he has a Grand Larceny case sitting on his desk, he'll have no problem sending out one of patrolmen to do a buy.

I know this sounds over the top but they do happen, specially when you've done all of the leg work and all they need to do is be present.

Did you give any sort of deposition? That is key to tell you how much the department you're working with cares, in that deposition there should be enough detail of your property to not only identify it but hopefully make an arrest on it, pending it shows up.

Start with those things.

Get the department involved, figure out what level the incident is classified at, crime and level of offense, make sure you are deposed, tell them you believe you have a solid lead on the person and property and lastly don't do anything yourself.

Even if they do catch the person selling it and can't connect the dots for the larceny, they can at least get your property back and get an arrest for possession.

Good luck.

It's a MacBook Pro... I'm sure they've got teams of detectives working in shifts, around the clock.

This, take a friend and have them bust out a camera and start taking pics as soon as you have it. That tends to make thieves a tad uncomfortable.
