Low idle, LOTS of smoke
Okay, So I bout my first 2004 wrx in the best color in the world (wrb) and Everytime the car is cold, especially on start up, there is A LOT of smoke coming from the exhaust. as it warms up there is less and less, and after about 5 minutes of driving it warm, it stops. I also noticed when it is warm, it idles low, at about 500 rpm, sounds like the timing of the idle is off. I did use the Accessport to adjust the idle, so it idles at about 750-800. If anybody could help me out, or give me some suggestions, let me know. If you have any questions to help you make a diagnosis, let me know. Also shoots water out of the exhaust.
Here's a video I took... http://www.youtube.com/watchv=ATXroAUB6iA&feature=plcp Thanks for any help.

Is it smoke or steam? You should be able to tell pretty easily based on the smell. Big difference in how you approach this if its burning oil when the engine is cold...

Sounds like a leaking head gasket. Have you been keeping an eye on your coolant level? Or engine temp gauge? If the steam/smoke smells like a dogwood/fish/dirty lady parts then its definitely antifreeze.
The leak completely slows or stops when the engine is warm due to thermal expansion. Your head, block and head gasket expand ever so slightly and fill the void as the engine reaches operating temp. Also the water molecules in your coolant expand as the engine heats up and are less likely to leak through to your cylinder from the water jacket. This is why you have an over flow reservoir in your coolant system. My '92 legacy blew the passenger side head gasket and it still drove around for over a week. Granted I did leave a long trail of smoke. I suggest NOT attempting to replace your gaskets on your own unless you have the ability to pull your engine and have a second car to drive for a while. Good luck! |

By the way a 500rpm idle is standard. Every subie I've driven sits solid at 500.
