Default 98 Legacy Wagon Stalls when put in gear.

Hi everyone, I am trying to help my parents figure out what is wrong with their legacy outback wagon. I am in Fla and they are in Pa otherwise I would just go play with it. Anyway, when it is cold and it has not been run in about an hour or more, when it is put in reverse from park, or drive from park the rpms drop quick and it stalls out immediately. If you start it and let it run for 5 - 6 minutes then put it in gear it is fine. Their mechanic thought it was the torque converter , replaced it, and it still does it. It is not throwing a CEL. Once its in gear and driving it all works fine, except cruise control doesnt work. I told them it was likely a vaccuum leak. Any ideas ???

Hi There , Sounds like car is working fine when warmed up but not when cold . Could be ecu is not recognising fact that car is cold due to a duff sensor in the engine management . Possibly a u/s coolant temperature sensor . This is a cheap item although awkward to get at and worth trying as its a known issue on an older car and wont necessarily throw a code when faulty .
