Goodluck finding one at the dealer for less than that. I just bought a brand new one for close to $500 but it gives me peace of mind since the other rebuilt stuff is pretty much crap.

I want to replace just the o-rings and not the bearing/seal.
As long as I don't touch the bearing/seal i should be OK right? Doesnt' seem like everyone here is replacing them.

A new one should be a little over $400 online. Sucks but at least its the only expensive thing that's needed replacing aside from tires. Can't complain too much

And yes, you can just replace the rear o-ring if you like.

A couple longshot guesses... Is the belt tight enough? Is your fluid fresh (enough)?

I checked the belt and it seems tight enough.I also changed the fluid when I changed the orings on the power steering pump.

Default Power steering pump prob on my 01' Legacy

As its getting colder out when I go to start my car in the morning the power steering pump whines like a bad ass out of hell. I flushed the fluids once already and the levels are where they should be, anyone know what I could do to fix my problem?

I just rolled over 90k on my '04 STi and in the last couple of months have noticed some intermittent steering issues.

Once or twice I've heard the belts squeal just a smidge and it goes away quickly.

I've also noted on startup a few times the power steering is a tad sluggish to respond. It lasts only a fraction of a second and then it's fine.

Fluid level is good and I don't detect any leaking fluids.

I'm hopeful I just need the belts replaced. I ordered them last night along with a belt tensiometer. But now I'm thinking I really ought to do the timing belt too.

Alright thanks, I really hope that I can get it figured out. Instead of going to the dealer and getting a new 440.00$ pump I will get one from a junkyard and rebuild it myself for cheap.it will take some troubleshooting but I think I can solve it! Thanks, I will keep ya posted.

Probably doesn't help but i've had the rack and pump replaced after numerous leaks, o-ring and fluid changes and it it still makes noises at full lock.

Poor engineering plain and simple.

Yea I think the filter could be bad too... If I do the flush and the rebuilt pump miles as well do the filter as well. I don't know Exactaly where it is located tho. If someone could help me out. Usually they're the same on most 2000 Subarus.

RockAuto is looking like the best option now. They have a really low price and I'm really tired of all the probs that the stock one has been giving me. Thanks for the help guys! I will post some stuff afterwards.

For the record my o ring below the banjo bolt was leaking and I could not find a replacement at any auto store. It is a -014. All I could find was a 014 I must think that the dash means something. And that one does not work. Any way I ended up finding a -014 at a cat store for heavy equipment. They had a ton of o rings for anyone trying to find just one or two. I didnt ask for all the sizes for a complete rebuild but after seeing their o ring selection they probly have all of them. Just wanted to make it easier for some one else to find what they need.

Can you post pics of the top, front, sides, and rear? Then maybe we can give some input based on other model years.

Default correct o-ring sizes

Well I had a long drawn out reply to this thread with pictures and all. but it's been about 3 weeks now and still hasn't been "approved" by the moderators. so here is my shortened version.

the o-ring all the way in the center of the pump is wrong. OP has dash 21 listed as the size, but that o-ring (especially in FEP) is way too thin as other have posted. I used a dash 119 FEP ring with EXCELLENT results, plenty of power steering at idle and no noise. The dash 21 O-ring doesn't seal properly with the pump half and as a result you get low to no power steering at idle.

Also the 07 sti like I have has an extra O-ring in the back outer half of the pump. in addition to a dash 15 o-ring there is also another dash 14 ring right next to it.

and finally, for anyone else doing this, I HIGHLY recomend HBNR green o-rings for everything except the 2 O-rings inside the pump. Use FEP for those (dash 119 and dash 136). reason being the HBNR seals better against imperfect surfaces unlike the fep with is a harder O-ring and doesn't seal quite as well (mine leaked for a while)

happy rebuilding and thanks to 68cadillac for doing the original research and being the first guinea pig

There have been other posts about using thicker rings where he recommends. And I posted a picture of the extra ring on the 06 pump. Makes sense that it would be on the 07 as well. You can actually see the extra plumbing from the outside of the pump to know if you need it. I can't speak to ring material, but I also used FEP for just the two big rings... More due to cost than anything else, but mine is working well too.

While there is no way for me to be sure of the inner ring size on a lesser year model than mine, I figured I would post my results to doing this as to help others. I saw a few posts from people who were having power steering issues at idle after a rebuild.

While the thinner o-ring certainly works, it makes for a pump with less output than stock. In fact, I had NO power steering at first, I let the car sit over night and magically had some power steering the next morning(o-ring swelled). AS I can tell the only difference between mine and the older pumps is the extra O-ring as every other seal was a correct fit.

And reason for not using an fep ring for the big back half o-ring, is mine would leak for a few days after assembly there AND from one of the plugs on the pump. had to take it back out and use some rtv to get it to seal 100%. probably am going to replace all the FEP rings i put in there except the 2 inner ones that don't seal externally, as these see the most heat. the green hbnr rings seal better for the outside (leak worthy) o-rings. just a thought.

BTW this thread should be stickied somewhere if it s not!

Update to my original post..
**
1x MS28775-015 - FEP Encapsulated
1x MS28775-017 - FEP Encapsulated
1x MS28775-021 - FEP Encapsulated
1x MS28775-037 - FEP Encapsulated
1x MS28775-136 - FEP Encapsulated
3x MS28775-014 - FEP Encapsulated
100x MS28775-013 -Buna N per post #9
**

I replaced the 2 inside seals, the big one and the small one were the only 2 I replaced INSIDE the pump itself W/ FEP. Not leaking yet. Hopefully it stays that way... I will update if it doesnt. EXTERNALLY- Also did the sensor on the back with a new o-ring, the bolt one with the spring, and the inlet joint o ring with FEP. A total of 5 replaced all FEP... crossing my fingers they hold tight.

Sidenote..
Also rebuilt my alternator with new bearings, they originally swapped the regulator too.. I installed and had battery light, brake light,r diff temp light on+ No charging...
Removed and they put the OEM regulator back on and everythings back to normal on the alternator.

a quick question, my PS pump is leaking exactly as shown on pics on this thread.. I have only 3700 miles on my car..!! its a bit weird to have the pump leak with such low miles.!!!
what could be the reason for such a leak ?
