Default Porsche unveils race-ready 911 RSR 'Type 991'

Leftlane: http://www.leftlanenews.com/porsche-911-rsr.html

Porsche has taken the wraps off its 'Type 991'-based 911 RSR. The race-ready 911 is a direct successor to last year's GT3 RSR.

Set to make its racing debut at the 6 Hours of Silverstone this weekend, Porsche's latest RSR-variant ditched its 'Type 997' roots in favor of the automaker's seventh-generation 911 design. As a result of that switch, the RSR's wheelbase is 100mm longer than the outgoing GT3 RSR.

Other improvements include a wishbone front suspension in place of last year's McPherson struts, a lightened six-speed sequential gearbox and an “optimized” 4.0L boxer-six engine. Despite the mechanical improvements, the output of the RSR's engine remains unchanged at 460 horsepower.

Although it won't necessarily show up on any stat sheets, Porsche says it has improved the RSR's weight balance and reduced the car's center of gravity through the use of lightweight materials like carbon fiber and polycarbonate.

The 2013 911 RSR will wear unique livery in its racing debut to help celebrate the 911's 50th anniversary.

Not a big fan of the 911, but, I like this. Only makes one wonder what Porsche could do if the Cayman received the "RSR treatment".
