Looking at a 2002 Impreza Outback Sport
I just checked out this car last night and I was really pretty impressed. The owner has done a lot of work on it and it put me more at ease about the high mileage, but I figured I'd see what you all thought. Also just thought I'd say hi. Apparently I've had an account here for awhile and never made a post. Tried to register today and the username was already in service. So I tried my usually username/password and sure enough I was logged in.
I'm a fan of the bug eye Imprezas and love wagons so that's kind of what I've had my eye on for awhile.
The Outback Sport I'm taking a look at has just over 200k miles, but has had a lot of work done in the last year and is a current daily driver. Here is the list of things that have been replaced.
Cam and crank seals
All associated idler pulleys and auto tensioner
Passenger side head gasket
Both valve cover gaskets
All accessory belts
WRX struts and springs all around
New catalytic converter
New spark plugs
Light weight crank pulley
New bulbs for speedo gauge
New polyurethane shifter bushings
Rear main for crankshaft
It does need a new wiper blade on the back and the passenger side fog light glass is broken and needs replaced. Also there is a popping/clunking noise occasionally when driving over bumps on the road and the owner says it needs a new passenger side lower control arm bushing. Other than that it rode nice and was in over good shape for the age of the car. Drivers side bolster on the left side was starting to rip and it has some dings and scratches expected for a car of it's age.
At first the mileage was scaring me a bit, but after talking with the guy...who is a mechanic...and hearing all the things that have been done to it it seems like many of the issues that could come to light on a car with less miles have already been taken care of. I could possibly look around and find a car with less miles that costs more and have some of these issues surface as soon as I buy it.
Are there any other things I should be worried about with the 2.5 or the car in general? I did get a good look underneath and nothing looked bad. The head on the passenger side looked very clean so it's holding up well and the drivers side did look like it had a bit of grime around it, but it didn't look like it was leaking. I'm not sure why he didn't just replace both headgaskets while he was at it?
Ok, I've probably said enough for now. If I don't end up getting this one I'll probably still be looking around for a good 02-03 Impreza so maybe you'll see me some more on the forums.
