That 126mph was the highest. I had a couple in the high 125mph range that I did soft launches. My axles were not holding up so I got very few passes in. All of the passes were on a full fuel tank as well

Your cutting 1.6s so you're definitely getting off the line pretty good. I'm guessing the rear axles were the ones snapping. At the end of the day you got that 10sec pass which is no easy feat by all means with or without a full tank gas. Well documented journal too man with stellar results to back it up that never disappoints. Good read here so congrats to you and Nuke.

Thanks! You are correct that it is the rear axles. I broke one on each side yesterday.

So Ben what do you do to stop breaking the axles now? I mean the obvious is to not launch the car but for you going for more power and faster times, do you just continue to bring spares to the track or is there a fix lined up?

Probably end up cheaper getting DSS rear axles at this point. If you're snapping an axle or two every time you go out, eventually you'll make up the difference.

DSS rear axles and an r180 would cost me well over $1000 but it should take care of it or at least make it much less likely. But I think I've spent about $10-15 on each replacement axle so far. So I could do a LOT more stock axles before the cost evens out. The downtime at the track is the real issue.

Oh, just rebuilding them, I see. The second time I had to do that at the track I wouldn't bring it back until I got something beefier. More power to ya.

No, I'm not rebuilding. Just swapping in a spare stock WRX axle and throwing out the old one. If I got 20+ passes before breaking (like last time) I'd be OK swapping in a $10 axle. But if I am only getting 1-2 launches then it's not worth it.

Forgot you were still on WRX axles. Those are much easier to come by (and cheaper) than STi axles.

jeez I too for some reason was thinking of your GR drivetrain and also thought you had the r180 and STI rears!

the first after so many passes I was like fine, then saw these two I thought you must be wheeling hopping something fierce! the wrx axles make sense now! hahaha!

Target Boost: 30psi

Fuel: E85

10.99s @ 126mph with 1.67s 60' (street tires)

I drove the car ~2 hours up to BIR on Friday and made my first pass in the afternoon/evening. I was launching at around 5,500rpm's and only building a few psi of boost off the line (fuel cut launch control), but it was still enough to spin the tires hard and I broke an axle on the very first launch (driver rear). Spent an hour or so swapping in another OEM WRX axle.

I did a few passes with no launch and was trapping around 126mph consistently. It did mid-11's even with a ~2sec 60' time. I did another pass with launch control and it did a 1.6s 60' but I missed third gear. On the next launch it had a little hop, but it did another 1.6s 60' and I made a pretty clean pass which resulted in the 10.99s slip.

On the 10 second pass I shifted the car into 5th to make it through the traps. I had been going through in 4th for my earlier passes but the car didn't feel like it was pulling quite as hard up near 8,000rpm's so I decided to shift instead. It was almost time for the track to shut down at that point but I decided to do one more pass. Spun hard and broke the passenger rear axle.

I swapped the axle (I had 4 spares with), but then I decided not to run drag on Saturday and Sunday. It cost more money and I was tired of changing axles. On Sunday I did roll racing. I was neck and neck with several other cars in the same power range and I pulled on a stock GTR. Then I drove the car back home. Overall a great weekend and I'm happy to be in the 10's!

Nice work Ben!

Wish I could have made it up but I spent the whole weekend swapping in a new clutch and turbo setup to get ready for the Subaru shootout coming up.

Have you tried the drag anti-lag in the carberry tune to see how it works? Maybe a little MORE spin would move the car and avoid some hopping if that's what is happening. Just taking a guess at it though. What tires are you running? I might have missed it if you mentioned it somewhere.

I don't have the anti lag setup on this car, but I've seen it on other cars and it does launch very hard. I drove one that had it setup last year and made 15+ psi on the line. That's all but useless on street tires. Even with fuel cut LC and only a couple psi I could still spin really hard if I slipped the clutch a little.

Excessive spin was when I would break axles. The spin leads to hop and hop leads to breakage. When it grips well (and launches hard or bogs) I haven't had any breaks. I think with slicks they tend to spin a little more smoothly, so that might actually help if it reduces hop.

Right now I'm running the cheap-o Federal 595 RS-R tires in the 235/45R17 size.

PS. New thread title! Thanks to the mod who took care of it for me!
