Horsepower numbers for the new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata might have just leaked.

According to a Chicago Auto Show webpage, the new car’s 2.0-liter SkyActiv four-cylinder engine is going to make 155 hp. The information was reported by Autoblog, but appears to have been removed from the Chicago Auto Show’s website. A Mazda spokesperson was not willing to confirm or deny the number’s accuracy to Autoblog, saying that they “aren’t sure where they got that number.”

If it is accurate, the new car will make 12 less horsepower than the current MX-5, though the 2016 model’s weight loss will give it a better power-to-weight ratio than the current MX-5.

Previous reports have indicated that the new MX-5 will be getting the same engine 2.0-liter engine as the Mazda3, which puts out 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque.

I would not put stock in that number until it is official. There has been so much speculation on the HP, that the Auto Show may have just posted one of the many articles that said it was rumored to be 155hp. I truly hope that number is closer to 180hp, but time will tell.

Because with 155hp, that's exactly how much time it will take to get where you're going.

It'll have 25 more horsepower and weigh 300 lbs less than my old RX7.

$25k with heated seats please.

You cannot size up the car based purely on numbers.

Go drive it and then comment on it. Light weight has its advantages.

For sure. That said, I have no need or want for the convertible aspect so it has to have something beyond just the weight...something like power.

I thought there were rumors of two engines? Maybe a 2.0 liter and a 2.5 liter?

That shot is from unrealistically low. From average person height it looks less mean.

I think Mazda will be making this car for a very long time. Not sure the same can be said about the BRZ. How many competitors(type and cost) have come and gone in the 25 years the Miata has existed? I just feel the BRZ will be another one.

The miata is also Mazda's "Halo" car, none of the competitors are halo cars. In addition, Mazda is splitting costs with Fiat to make this ND model happen.

Sure, but that doesn't mean I'm going to buy one when the BRZ's dead.

I think the RX8 is farther up the ladder than the Miata.

you gotta admire mazdas tenactiy and discipline with the miata: lighter weight, less power, dont make it any bigger.

I think they got a focus group report and did the exact opposite. People have been saying the miata needs more power forever and maybe needs to be a bit more macho.

If mazda had listened even half the time the miata would have evolved into a turbo sebring by now.

Aschen loves the looks but even as a purist thinks 150hp is a bit low.
