Default How to fix a window switch

Edit: the photos work on the phone app but not on a PC. sorry I don’t know why. See post #23 for a way to view them on a computer.

How to fix a broken window switch.
This is on my 02 WRX.
The window would go down, but not up.

Remove switch from door card.
Use a flat hard tool to pry up the back of the switch plate

Lift it up to expose the wire connection

Press this button while pulling to disconnect

Carefully pry apart the black tabs to remove the cover (this step is not necessary but it does give you more room). Then pry apart the white tabs. CAREFUL, THERE ARE SMALL PARTS THAT MAY GO FLYING!!!! Do this on a work table so you don't loose anything. Yes the switches are made by Nissan. Edit: Cougar4's good bag tip is in post 3.

These are all the parts.

Here is the most likely reason for the failure. Those little "smudges" on the plates and fulcrum. Clean them up.

Like this (the fulcrums were not done yet).

Default How to fix a window switch

Part 2.

These are the rockers. Clean them up too. I also bent them ever so slightly, so they make better contact. DON'T BEND TOO MUCH!!! Just a hair. You do NOT want them to always be in contact.

Like this.

Install the rockers. They should rock like a seesaw.

Install the springs into the switch cap. Tip, put a dab of grease on the end of the spring that goes into the cap. It helps during reassembly. I also stretched them just a hair, to increase pressure.

Ball bearings go here.

Here's the tricky part. Put the switch cap on top of the switch. Carefully put the toggle plate on top and click it all together. This might take several tries as they don't always want to line up. Do this in the upright position. I put the white switch part on the table and then put the black part on top, then pushed down. Like this.

Install switch onto the door card in the reverse order you removed it.

I hope this helps.

I'll add one more suggestion to this nice post. If you take the switch apart, do it while you have it inside a clear plastic bag. If parts do go flying at least you should be able to keep them in the bag and not have to hunt them down.

This was very helpful, and fixed my passenger side window switch from randomly working on my 02 Impreza. Thanks!

Very nice post.
In the past I would spray RadioShack Contact Cleaner into the switch.
I now use CRC QD Electronic Cleaner to clean electronic contacts.

Thank you.
I've used cleaners before and they do work, but sometimes they just don't reach all the right places.

Nice write up and good info.

Additional thoughts.
An ink eraser can be used for the contact cleaning, small enough to get places and not too abrasive.
White lithium lube or Vaseline can be used for the "grease" along with other substitutes.

Good comment by Cougar4 on the bag idea.

I think you have a fuse issue.

Hi new here, I just got a 2002 WRX and the driver side door window isn't moving at all, I believe the switch is busted but not the motor. The previous owner told me that he replaced the motor not too long ago and it stopped working again recently. I attempted to follow your guide but got stuck at the beginning! I attempted to remove the switch panel like you did in the picture but the sucker wouldn't budge! Any tips?

It's a tight fit into the armrest. Try a little harder.

You can try this for the pictures

“If you click the pic links to imgur, all you have to do is remove the "http://dereferer.org/?" from in front of the "https://imgur.com" part and you can view the pics.”
