New question, any homeowners dealt with widespread noxious weed control?

I've got 2-3 acres of forest (mainly ash and very old apple trees) that has been completely taken over with garlic mustard, and have a notice from the town that I'm required to "eradicate" it.

Hand pulling and bagging (recommended) is going to be about 1000 hours labor. I started spraying...but I'm looking at 300 gallons of 1% spray to cover everything...and that will kill all the good stuff too.

weeds in a forest and they want you to deal with it? How dense are the woods?

Best bet is to brush hog the **** out of it, then spray.

Just did a GIS....I've got that **** all over my property (3/4 acre of yard)...I just spray or weed whack it every once in a while.

If the woods are 'natural', why bother? No one is out in the woods of public land, clearing this ****.

So I've pretty much ****ing had it with contractors. Half of them don't bother to even return your call, of those only half actually show up for the appointment and then I get a quote that's completely unreasonable. All I want is a garage and a breezeway added to my house. I don't want marble floors or solid gold screws or ceiling joists made out of whale ribs or anything. I don't care if its insulated or drywalled. I don't care if they bother to put a room above it. How the **** can this very basic construction cost 70K? I could buy a manufactured home WITH a 2 car garage outright for 70K. One quote was for $78,500.

What type of structure are you willing to deal with? You could do a pole-barn style building for a lot less if you're just looking for garage. But if it's being added onto the house with a breezeway, I'm guessing you want it to match the home or at least match the style.

What does the site look like where you want to build? Is it level, have any trees? A 'standard' 2-car garage with foundation, framing, permits, etc will likely cost $45-50k. Nearly $80k? GTFOOH.

That's their solution? Oregon has a list of bugs (agents) you're supposed to use to target specific plants (Alliaria petiolata is not among the targets.)

At any rate, they may have a program that you can use.Maybe a community service program.

You are defining the scope of the project so what are you asking for? The more definitive you are with the scope of work the easier it is to tell when whale bone joists get quoted and when cost over runs start to occur.

They do have all kinds of programs. There was even a "group pull" a couple weeks ago in a natural area down the road (which I didn't know about until I started researching last weekend).

Unfortunately, nothing eats this. They are researching biocontrol, but there's nothing yet. I guess goats will eat it...but my work blocks that rentagoat site.

I eradicated a field of stinging netttle over the last year. Used this at 2oz per gallon. Walked around once a week and sprayed anything green.

I'd find out why it is important to the town. Best bet is to mow but if the woods are dense then you are f'd and will have to weed eat / spray.

kinda sounds like a "go **** yourself" quote. When bidding projects (unrelated to construction) in a prior job, if I really didn't want to do the job, or really didn't want to work with the person requesting the bid, I'd sometimes give a ridiculously high bid. I think this is fairly common practice.

So, maybe something about what you're asking for or the way you ask for it seems unreasonable?

So 45 - 50K is what I figured. There are a few trees that would have to come down (for all intensive porpoises I live in a forest, so yeah there are trees). The garage would be built on the existing driveway (yes it's level). There's probably a 3 - 4' difference in elevation between the house and the driveway, but I don't care if garage and breezeway aren't at the same elevation. Stairs, how do they work? So I'm not exactly being picky here...

I'm even willing to have the garage at an angle from the house to better fit the space if necessary and reduce the site work necessary. I'm just wondering if its a simple matter of what the market will bear? The other side of town is pretty pricey?

Its pretty much the best way to kill them. They will come back after mowing and pulling is too much work. Keep spraying and they will be gone in a couple months.
