Why didn't they make the flange for the donut thicker?

Because that is where the SUBARU design comes in with the two springs one on each side of the flange with nuts & the bolts!
I am not sure why it's made that way? I am guessing the OEM pipes are designed that way to make sure the pipe flexes with acceleration. Last edited by ZURCALED12; 04-09-2017 at 09:06 PM. |

Yes I know how it looks there, but why wasnt it made thicker ? I'm just imagining that skinny bit of metal will buckle under the load of the springs ?

Based on the pics I assumed the pipe was stainless. Is that not the case, or why are you spending extra money to coat stainless?

As an example, on my older Impreza's midpipe, the inlet flange (where those same spring-loaded bolts are used) has a flange made from similarly thin steel. However, it's a stamped flange, with a ~1/4" lip all the way around, which gives it the strength it needs. Your flange, without that lip, and with the bolt holes right at the ends of the flange (not sure why they did that ), is going to flex like crazy. I don't have a pic of the back side of the flange to really show the lip, but you can see the rolled edges of the flanges - that's because they're stamped. From what i remember its a perrin turbo manifold and the collector has been cut and rotated. Any interested? 150 picked up or 180 shipped

Mike is back on the radar
Well, given that this thread has basically been a rage-fest since Mike disappeared, it is probably worth noting that he is back on the grid trying to make good on his past deals and rebuild bridges with the Subaru community.
He has started giving refunds in payments to those that were left with nothing to show for their down payments (or building them product). Given that I paid nearly $800 in down payments for a full exhaust, getting a refund (regardless of how long I waited) makes me willing to forgive the past. Mike no longer accepts down payments, he will only accept money for product ready to ship. So that takes care of the issue that created so much drama with previous customers. If you've read this thread, you know Mike makes some of the best product in the business, and I have yet to see one person complain about the quality or sound. If he's got what you need in stock, I would highly suggest giving him a try. http://rallisportautomotive.com/ |

I got a partial refund from him, as well as a tactrix openport cable he sold in a garage sale as downpayment. I told him that I consider his debts to me to be paid.
I think he's serious about paying everybody back, and the part of not selling stuff before its made backs it up. But I'm still a bit hesitant to tell anyone to buy stuff from him... |

I had it fixed at a local shop but they didn't promise it was going to last because of the previous bandaid a this winter it has started to leak again. I don't know if they will be repairable again due to the lack of material. I didn't catch this mistake when I first installed the headers. They looked great, they sound awesome but for my money I'm going to with Inferno Fabrication next time I need a quality set of headers for an N/A. |

Hello, I'm sorry to hear about your problems with the header I built. Although I don't do the ceramic coating myself (I have a local pro do all my ceramic coating) I am happy to have them recoated for free. I'm not quite sure about the cracking issue you described, but my technique for the primaries is bringing the pipes close to flush with the flange, then use a carbide burr to make a 45 degree angle where the two would otherwise be flush. I then fuse the two with a TIG torch, this gives it that nice radius to where the exhaust pulses first enter the header. Almost all other headers have a sharp step at this juncture, which may be inconsequential for a 2.5i header, but still always bugged me. Again, I am happy to repair the header and have it recoated for you free of charge. If you would like, I can make you a "loaner UEL header" to run while I repair your header. You wouldn't have to send your damaged header in until after you have the loaner in your hands. No fabricator in the world (not even Inferno Fab) can guarantee that their header will last forever and never ever crack. The most we can do is stand behind our product and address any problems that should arise, which is exactly what I plan to do. I don't care if the header I made was last week or a v1 from seven years ago, I put my heart and soul into each and every header I ever made and stand behind every one. If given the opportunity, I will do everything in my power to make it right. Thanks, Mike |

I might take you up on the offer once I address a couple of other issues with the vehicle. I don't expect them to last forever but I did email you as soon as I saw the coating starting to crack off the cat and you offered to re-coat them for free back then but communications broke down in getting them back to you. This was before the flange issue as well. I'm all for the forgive and forget thing and the fact that you took the time respond to this post in short order hopefully means you are on the right track in redeeming yourself. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread and will probably reach out this summer to discuss the repair once I have some down time. Good luck and I wish you the best. |
