Default Anybody bought performance car without test driving?

Hello guys,
I wonder how many of us bought performance car without even test driving the car?
I personally have driven 2015 Stage 2 WRX multiple times before buying 2017 WRX but regret it now that I didn't even test drive the stock car.
I am curious if anybody made same mistake...

I bought my 15' WRX sight unseen. Told the dealer to find me a base model and let me know when it would arrive.
LOVE the car

I haven't ever bought a car, motorcycle, heck, not even bicycle without driving it first.
The closest was a new '89 Camry Alltrac, I had driven a 5MT but could only get a AT in the color I wanted. Dealer traded another dealer for it, but I still drove it before signing all the paperwork.

This goes for new and used......

Back in the day I ordered a new Z-28 Camaro and bought it without driving it first. One of my favorite cars I owned.

No. Never. If this car had a clutch like my Saturn I wouldn't have bought it.

Not a performance vehicle but I bought my 15' Tundra tow rig site unseen, no test drive and I love it. I drove a friends 15' Tundra a week before so didn't feel the need.
Back in the year 2000 you couldn't test drive an S2000 in NY and that car is a gem. But I can see how this could easily backfire on someone!

I've bought quite a few cars sight-unseen from across the country.

But perhaps your question goes more to having driven the same type of car before, rather than the actual same car.

Test drives are mandatory for me. Dealer/seller won't play? I'm gone...

Agreed, although my "worst example" still had me driving a similar car before signing. Difference was color and AT vs. MT.
Later on, bought my 98 Legacy GT wagon 5MT to replace the Camry. Outback vs. GT back then, wanted to corner, thus the GT. Only other way to get the 2.5L.

I've purchased a few without a test drive. All of these though were ppi'd from forum members of the respected model.

Srt-4
LGT
WRX
Civics with builds,turbo,nitrous
Jk wranglers.

The forums are a good resource.
Good luck!

OP.

Are you planning to keep the car? Looks like you just got it and you keep complaining about it every other post.

Agreed. Although i didn't actually test drive my 18 STI (which i ordered) before doing paperwork but i had driven another base 18 STI at the same dealership when i order mine and also drove a number of other used models from various dealers in the area so i knew what i was getting.

I've had a few vehicles and this is my favorite so far no question.

Ordered a 13 STI Limited Sedan without having driven an STI sedan. Missed 12 model year by a few weeks. They only had a 12 STI 5 door. Drove it nicely around block as I was not going interested in 5 Door version. Waited 14 weeks for car to arrive.

Then in May 15, my area flooded and that 13 became a submarine. Called dealer and put a deposit down on last WRB 15 STI they had while settling with insurance. First drive of 15 was on way home after purchasing it.

Bought a 18 STI in August 2017 after lady ran light and totaled my 15 STI. Worked out deal with dealer 200 miles away while settling with insurance. 18 STI were just starting to show up and they were only dealer in 400 miles who had color and options I wanted. Since 18 was basically same with lots of upgrades only question was Recaro seats. I was able to sit in Recaro equipped WRX on local dealer lot.

So I have bought 3x STI and never test drove what I was getting. The 18 was so similar to the 15 that I knew what I was essentially getting. I only drove them when leaving the dealer after the purchase. I have been very happy with my STI ownership except for they keep getting totaled by events beyond my control.

Agreed.

Huffines Dodge, Plano, TX in December: "I'll be back on 27 Jan, please have the SRT 392 for me to drive".

Jan 27, them: "So, you're here to order the SRT?"
Me: "No, I'm here to drive it and see if I like it."
Them: "There isn't one in 250 miles."
Me: "Thanks. Do you happen to know Wes Unseld? As in nobody sold as many cars as Wes unselled?"

Yeah... I don't plan to keep my car for long. I wish nobody makes same mistake I made by getting a car without even test driving.
This is my first car and I guess it was a big lesson here.
However, I don't think I would complain if I bought STi.
Lack of test driving and researching the difference between WRX vs STi got me here.

Once and never again. I was young and excited when I bought a NSRT-4 and the dealer wouldn't let me test drive it. I quickly found out why when it overboosted and the turbo decided to quit. It was modded and the dealer had no idea what was done but they clearly knew something wasn't quite right or else why not let me test drive? After that I discovered a slew of other, smaller issues but it was enough to deter me from doing it again.

I did a lot of research and bought my WRX sight-unseen, but this was right after the Tsunami when supply was short. Dealer didn't have any on the lot, bought the last one in transit.

Fortunately I have been very happy with it and don't plan on trading it for a newer WRX.

What's so bad about it?..

Also, mod it?

I always test drive. I have never ordered a car, though. I have always purchased something that was on the lot.

Ordered(well, dropped deposit as they didn't know what I was talking about) my 1st STi the day after the reveal. I test drove a WRX for the first time then(never wanted to drive one as I knew I'd buy it and I was waiting for STi). I, however, have never owned anything but a Subaru and had full confidence I would like it. Of course, at the time, I was driving a 135hp Legacy and a 71hp Justy. Of course I was going to like "300" HP. Then sold it to pre-order the 2008. Again. Not disappointed. NOW, if I ever considered another manufacturer, I believe I'd agree with most of you. Need to test drive to find the right fit.

Almost bought a Golf R without test driving it.
good thing I eventually found a dealer that let me try it out. Not what I was looking for.
Got the 17 STI instead.

Sorta off topic, sorta not needed here........
If I was going to marry a virgin, I may/may not "test drive first", otherwise, yes, test drive first....

OK, mods can delete this if need be.......

I bought my 08 Civic Si back in the day without ever having sat in one, much less driven one; just based off what Id read about it. I test drove a 17 WRX before ordering one. Didnt test drive the actual ordered car, figured the warranty would take care of any issues. I was 95% sure I was going to order the WRX before the test drive. If you do your due diligence online, you should know exactly what to expect before you ever get to the dealership (assuming its a stock car. Id never buy a modded one).
