Default Group N trans mount

With the Group N trans mount take away the movement on the shifter when getting on and letting off the gas?

This drives me crazy.

What are the other benefits?

No. Maybe a little bit. A heavier knob does.

It makes lash less harsh in traffic, and less drivetrain push when you’re hard on it

On an older subaru the group N trans mount (with engine mount and pitch mount) definitely reduced the shifter movement for me in lots of different scenarios like getting on and off gas.

Assuming the gearbox itself is in good order, the shifter movement when in gear is from the whole transmission moving.

Cable shifter now, not directly linked

Which mount does the VA benefit from most tho? Trans, engine, or pitch if not wanting to replace all three and sacrificing daily drivability?

Transmission by far, then motor, then pitch with brace in my opinion.

I would suggest the trans mounts and bushings (whiteline makes a good set) are the most important for shifting..

I for one never got used to the WRX 6sp.. that cable shifter sucks, I threw every mod available at it.. I thought I sucked at driving a manual, yet it seems to have been a really ****ty gear box. From day one I would have to slow down to a crawl to go from 3rd to 2nd or I would have to slam it and grind it. missing shifts was an every other shift thing.. hated it, especially on the track. going from 3rd to 2nd.. to realize I went to 4th instead... ughh... same mounts for both WRX or STI transmission..

Engine mount really doesn't affect the shifting as much as it does the damned noise in cabin (I use Perrin so can't speak for group N) but they are similar.

Pitch stop brace is good only if you get the re-enforced Perrin pitch stop mount first, it helps and can keep your fire wall from ripping apart.

best to do the trans mount and bushings...

Thanks, this is exactly what I have on my to do list. Group N trans mount and Whitelines shift kit. I've read Kartboy makes a decent set as well.

I've also heard the trans mount adds to nvh, but I'd take a little noise to make the shifting experience better lol.

The nvh from that is negligible compared to Engine Mounts and Pitch stop. I know this cause I was gonna do all at once, but had trouble getting the engine mounts in. So I drove it with just the Trans done for a week till I got the time, nerves and courage to tackle it again. and it was a very noticeable difference in nvh with the Engine mounts.

I did the Perrin trans mount and Kartboy rear diff inserts and those made a big difference in things shaking when taking off and down shifting.

Theory says to keep the same bush/mount stiffness the same across the 3 engine/trans/pitch. If 1 or 2 are stiffer then they give the softer ones a hard time. In reality Im not sure how long it would take to see extra wear and tear on the remaining softer ones.

I agree, yet OP seems to only be able to budget one step at a time.. I went as far as to even change out every bushing and bracing and even did full subframe poly mounts (not the inserts but the whole bushings, it was a pain..) the car transformed into something very different. Solid but noisy. Not sure I would recommend this on a DD that doesn't do any track or autox time..

I have the Group N transmission mount, Energy Suspension transmission crossmember bushings, Perrin brass shifter bushing, and a Torque Solutions pitch stop in my car. NVH is noticeable at first, coming from a dead stock car, but doesn't do enough to make the change beyond "daily driver friendly". The benefits greatly outweigh the slight increase in cabin noise.

Having driven a box-stock WRX recently, I can say that the transmission mount and bushing mods cannot be understated for importance. It makes an otherwise-mushy feeling gearbox and tightens everything right up. If you want to make it near-perfect, then add a Boomba short throw shift lever and complete the trifecta.

I have the STi short shift package (from the dealer) in the car with the Perrin brass bushing and shift stop and the shifting in general is much cleaner and crisp. There is only a little movement when I let off the gas, and that doesn't bother me. Eventually I would like to do the Perrin trans mount, but since I'm not dogging the car, it is not high on my priority list.

Can you explain what you mean by lash less harsh in traffic?

It takes the "slop" out of the driveline when stopping/starting in traffic, when you can't constantly engage and disengage the clutch back and forth. Basically, it makes everything in the drivetrain "move around" less to keep the car from lurching.

Honestly I don't think the smaller rubber inserts/bushings between the individual parts of the crossmember underneath the trans make as big of a difference given how small they are. Those are likely there as an effort to reduce NVH.

The transmission mount itself is the biggest piece of the puzzle. I replaced it last night and you can bend the thing 90 degrees with your pinky. Before I unbolted everything, I reached up and wiggled the transmission all over the place with my decided non-he-man arms.

I wanted to keep NVH increases at a minimum, so what I did was I bought a used OEM trans mount from the STI. it's significantly stiffer than the stock WRX, but not quite as stiff as Group N.

I noticed an immediate difference. Shifting while accelerating and decelerating in particular was night and day.

If you want to improve the feel of your car significantly without any sort of tuning, the best $300-400 you can spend are on:

1. Transmission Mount
2. Shift stop (for 1st and 2nd, makes shifting feel a lot tighter)
3. Steering Damper lockdown (removes deadzone in steering, gives you WAY more feedback)
4. Rear Sway bar (something like 22mm)
5. Shifter bushing (your choice, I went with Delrin at first and then went to a shifter bearing from k4rtboy).

That, and mixing your tank with 3 gallons of E85 ESPECIALLY if you only have 91oct where you live.

I went with the following on my 17 rex:

- Group N Transmission Mount
- Perrin Brass Shifter Bushing
- Boomba Shifter Plate
- Perrin Shifter Stop
- Custom Weighted Shift Knob (500g)

That combo has made shifting far better than stock. Shifts are heavy and defined, but don't feel like a bag of rocks. Cannot recommend that setup enough.

Came late for the game but can anyone tell me what part number of the Group N for WRX 2018? All I can find is for STI.

I ended up doing the mod that Last Humans Garage did on his WRX, namely cutting out the center portion of a Group N tranny mount. Along with the brass shifter bushing, perrin stop and now a heavy shift knob. Real happy with the shifting now. Also added the bushing inserts in the rear diff.

What is the point/goal of doing that ?

I installed this over the weekend and it took about an hour. I noticed no additional NVH. I didn't replace any of the cradle bushings, just the mount itself. It dramatically helps smoothing out the shifts, especially between first and second and also start/stopping. Best bang for buck for sure. The car should have came with this from the factory.
