2018 WRX Front View Monitor [Retrofit/Install]
I have designed a plug-n-play T-harness to add a front camera to certain MY2018+ WRX/STI models. As far as I know, any car with SRH (steering responsive headlights) has the necessary vehicle-side wiring to support this mod. For reference, my car is a 2018 Limited CVT w/ EyeSight.
-------------------- First, a little background info: For anyone who doesn't know, the 2018 WRX is offered with a feature called Front View Monitor, a front facing camera mounted just below the Subaru emblem on the grille. A bit of searching will find that it's on upper trim JDM and AUDM cars (along with the Side View Monitor), but I have yet to see any North American spec car equipped with it. USDM literature does make mention of the feature, I'm guessing it was considered here but then removed for cost reasons. -------------------- Digging deeper: After reading a thread on Reddit, curiosity got to me and I started digging into it. I downloaded the service manuals and began digging through wire diagrams. Sure enough the manual shows the wiring path for it, so the next step was to pull apart my car and see for myself. Sure enough, the 24-pin Multi-Function Display connector (i222) has the 4 camera wires in pins 1-4. https://imgur.com/nMR6I5o Next connection along the line is down by the interior fuse panel, the gray 17-pin connector (i230). Pins 1-3 and 11 are the camera wires in this case, sure enough they exist. https://imgur.com/or3KZLL https://imgur.com/cpMkMHH After this connector the wiring travels under the hood to the 13-pin connector under the battery/above the washer fluid tank (B171). https://imgur.com/esEZnVF At this point however the wires dead end. https://imgur.com/vRPXlgX Given that the wiring already goes through the firewall to the engine bay, extending them to the front of the radiator will be fairly easy. Next logical step was to purchase the front camera. Full album showing the camera here: https://imgur.com/a/ofgl4Az -------------------- Ordering supplies: Once I determined what I was dealing with on the camera I placed an order for the 8-pin camera connector (F166) and the 13-pin front harness connector (B171). I'm not a fan of chopping up expensive wiring harnesses, so my solution is to create a T-harness that will plug inline and continue the camera wiring on to the front of the car. -------------------- More investigating: While I waited for the connectors to arrive from Japan I did more digging into the wiring. After determining the full pinout for B171 and realizing the other wires in it were for headlight leveling + SRH (Steering Responsive Headlights) and the hood switch, I began to wonder if all cars have the camera wiring up to this point or not. I spoke to a 2018 Premium owner and his B171 connector only has 2 wires for the hood pin, that's it. https://imgur.com/iDFEz5j As of now the data supports that SRH equipped cars have the camera wiring to this point and in non-SRH cars it dead ends at i230 under the dash. This is based on just 3 cars, but given that only upper-trim cars get the feature overseas it seems likely that this is accurate across all USDM 2018 cars. If anyone is interested in this and willing to take pictures of their connectors and post them it will really help with determining compatibility. I'm working with a Reddit user who has a base trim USDM car on this, so I'm hoping to create a plug-n-play solution for both setups. I can't find a source for the 17-pin i230 connector, however the MFD plug i222 is a fairly standard 24-pin radio connector. My thinking is a T-harness from there providing the 4 camera wires, which would travel down the passenger footwell, and out to the engine bay through this firewall grommet. https://imgur.com/U4NKO2I -------------------- Want to add to your vehicle? If anyone is interested in this let me know. I'll need a few pictures of connectors on your car to confirm the wires exist, and if they do I have a full plug-n-play solution available. The camera can be found on any of the parts websites with P/N 86357VA010. Cheapest price I found was on SubaruSource.com for $202.92 before shipping. Shipped it was under $217. Pricey, yes, but for OEM fitment it's worth it to me. For anyone who has ever scraped their bumper having this feature is well worth it. ------------------------- Testing: It works!!! The camera is just sitting on the ground here, working on finalizing my wiring before I mount it up permanently. Shift-link works as well, shifting from reverse to drive (or 1st in 6MT cars) will activate the front cam. Perfect for parallel parking situations. If you want to manually activate it, a quick press of the enter button will bring it up for up to 3 minutes before it auto-cancels.

HOW TO - Install my custom T-harness.
STEP 1: Remove bumper. There's plenty of good tutorials on YouTube demonstrating this. ------------------------- STEP 2: Locate the 13-pin connector above the washer fluid tank/below the battery. Mine is unclipped and unplugged in this picture. ------------------------- STEP 3: Connect the PNP harness' plugs to the vehicle connector. ------------------------- STEP 4: Route camera wiring towards the front of the vehicle. I used my pickup tool but a coat hanger or large zip tie would also do the trick. ------------------------- STEP 5: Tuck wiring into the foam seal below the radiator. It will have to loop above the lower radiator support as shown. ------------------------- STEP 6: Route the camera connector up the center radiator support, attach to horn wiring with a zip tie. (Note that my horn has been relocated to the bottom due to my driving lights, which are mounted via the Perrin horn bracket) ------------------------- STEP 7: Install the camera in the grille cutout. Just 3 phillips screws, very easy. ------------------------- STEP 8: Plug in camera (don't install bumper yet). The wire coming from the camera is long enough to reach the harness plug with the bumper sitting on the ground, allowing for easy bumper removal and installation. ------------------------- STEP 9: Test camera to ensure the harness, connectors, and camera are all working. Pull on connections to make sure there are no failure points. Start vehicle to ensure Steering Responsive Headlights and headlight lelveling calibrate upon startup like usual. ------------------------- STEP 10: Reinstall bumper and then you're done! This is awesome. I'm in the process of retrofitting the 18+ MFD into my '16 STI. Can't seem to find the necessary 12-pin socket, but I have found the 24-pin plug for the MFD and wiring diagrams. I have been interested in retrofitting this camera as I also have an '18 front bumper. I would have to build a custom wiring harness to go back into the cabin to the MFD though... Good work!!!

What triggers the camera to turn on? Obviously a reverse camera turns on with the car in reverse, would 1st gear turn this one on?

You just replied to me on Reddit right? Recognize the HyperBlue! Like I mentioned in my reply there I'll do some digging for that 12-pin connector and see if I can find it. |

Two scenarios turn on the camera: 1. Shifting from Reverse to 1st/Drive 2. Pressing the MFD [ENTER] button Both situations auto-cancel at a certain speed, though it can be manually re-enabled at any time and will display for up to 3 minutes. When pulling into a parking space I reach over and hit the button to see how far to pull up. It's very intuitive once you have it and lets you nail bumper-to-curb distance without the fear of scraping. |

I was wondering why in the world anyone would need this but considering I usually end up about a foot from the curb for fear of scraping, maybe it might come in handy.

I'm good with spacial stuff but terrible at judging where the front bumper is. I use it every time I park, it's handy to have. Haven't tested it with parallel parking yet but I'm sure it'll really help there. Although pricey to add, so is repainting your bumper. I could see it being especially useful if you had an expensive carbon fiber front lip or something. |

I have a 2018 WRX Limited with the head lights you mentioned. I also have to deal with a lot of shoddy parking space in Baltimore and I find I have to get out of the car and move more in every time. Are you going to make the plug and play harnesses by chance? I'm trying to keep all my mods using that type of hook up so if I want to trade the car in one day I can turn it back to stock easier. If not will you have drawings available?

What happens after you drive in the rain or snow or winter at all? The rear camera turns useless real quick.. cant imagine how quick the front gets plastered. Interested in doing it anyway though lol

Agreed. If you’ve ever ruined a front lip on a curb the u know how much this would get used. The way I see it is it’s worth every dollar if it can save one from having to buy multiple lips.

Any word of how this would connect to a base 18? Or how to retrofit it to work?

Working with a member on here to get a solution out for base/Premium trim cars. The under-hood wiring doesn't exist on them so there's a little bit of added complexity. Check back in a few weeks and I should have it all figured out by then! |

I am interested in doing this but need to make sure its compatible with a limited 2019 MT wrx with HK package
Is my first step to verify harness? Meaning I need to remove the bumper? Bluhh to doing that twice lol Is the harness expensive? Last edited by MtnXfreeride; 08-31-2018 at 07:15 AM. |

It can easily be verified without pulling the bumper, I'll shoot you a PM with where to check on your car. |
