Default manual transmission compatibility?

I have been searching for a chart that tells me which transmssions were interchangeable with subarus.... have not found any info. In particular, I have a 2000 2.5 Impreza RS manual trans here and wonder which other years and possible models it would fit - can anyone help?
thanks!

now, in semi answering myself, do i correctly assume that all subaru 5mt transmissions are interchangeable as long as one is happy with the gear ratios (which seem to be unique to the RS, although I havent found the legacy non gt ratios)?

Not all Subaru 5spds are interchangable. One difference you have to take in to consideration is which ones are push and which ones use pull clutches.

Then there's rear diffs and ect ect.

They ARE interchangeable you just have to run the clutch that the tranny calls for. And YES must have the rear diff that matches the tranny in final drive.

The 2.5RS 5spd runs a 4.111FD in that year; 00. You can get a Forester NA 5spd and it'll work. You can use an Legacy Outback NA 5spd and it'll work. You can use a newer 02-04 2.5RS and '05 2.5RS Sport and it'll work. You can use oldskool 93-96 Impreza WRX/STi non-RA and it'll work if you use the clutch made for the tranny. You can even use the '05 LGT turbo tranny but have to install the spur gear for speedometer.

I run a '04 JDM WRX STi DCCD 6spd/R180 on my '91 EJ22T block with 6spd clutch. This is WRX STi 6spd tranny on a Legacy EJ22T block, which is over 10yrs difference. Can even mate this 6spd onto the Subaru H6's currently!

Default Same question, different model

I have a 2004 Impreza outback sport. I need to find a replacement for a manual transmission. I'm having no luck at finding one, so I'm looking at other Subarus.

Locally I've found a 2003 legacy, a 2003 Impreza, a 2002 Forrester, and a 2004 Forrester. All with manual transmissions.

Are any of these compatible with my car? Or is there a resource I can turn to to find out?

The only issues with compatibility are push vs pull type clutch on the 5 speed trans. So you need to find out which type you have, replace with the same type and make sure you get the correct clutch for it. The other compatibility issue is with the 6 speed swap into 5 speed car as they require other parts to make them work. Try searching Subaru trans code list in google. Look for one from RalliSpec. They have the codes broken down into years and clutch type. It's a lot of work to switch from one type to the other.

Bolting in almost any 5MT in place of another 5MT is easy.

Best to match clutch type (push or pull) AND front diff ratio to rear diff ratio.
Many places on this forum and online to show the trans codes, info and years that work.

While this is an old question, here is some info. Quite a few years of Outback, Legacy GT and Impreza RS 5MT's will swap between the 3 with ONE difference.
The Legacy GT and Impreza RS have a taller 5th gear, 1-4 are all the same. I know, I have had an Outback trans in my Legacy GT and will be putting one in for a bit so I can drive the car while getting my correct trans worked on.

I was stating it's difficult to switch from push to pull type or vice versa. Which isn't as easy as just bolting it in.

Okay, I'm going to ask you this since you seem to know what you're talking about. I recently purchased my first subaru, a 2001 forester s with a 5speed in it that had a faulty input shaft bearing, figured since I was dropping the trans anyway, buy a replacement. The trans code for the one that came out of my car is, TY752VACCA ; the one i purchased's trans code is TY754VBBBA. I did a little digging and found out the trans that I just pulled out of my car is push type clutch, and the trans I purchased is a pull type clutch. Seeing as to what you said, I'm not entirely screwed. How do I can make the trans I purchased work? What do I need to buy/install, and are there any writeups on the how so I can get to wrenching ASAP. Any and all help is greatly appreciated, as it's 1:14 AM on Wednesday the 24th and I have plans to start a 19 hour drive to New Orleans for a festival around 2-3pm Thursday the 25th.

Default 98 legacy trans into 98 impreza

I bought a 98 impreza 2.2l 5MT, I am also wondering about trans swaps. I cant find another 98 impreza 5speed trans around but there is a 98 legacy 2.2l 5mt and i am wondering if that is the same final drive ratio as my 98 impreza.

Post comparability with trans from other cars

I just recently bought a 98 2.2 impreza hatch 5spd manual and it has a super old transmission that I want to replace but I am in on a super tight budget so I have been getting my parts off of junkyard cars. Because of this I don't really have the option to look only for Subaru parts. I was wondering what other cars have a five speed that would fit and work with my engine.

I believe a 2.2L Legacy is the same as your trans. There are lists here and online to help out.

You need a trans that has the output shafts where needed, thus, likely stuck to Subaru.
I believe several years of 2.2L Impreza and Legacy are all the same trans.

Hi, your car has a 3.9 final drive in the trans and in the rear diff. There's jdm 3.9 NA manual transmissions for a decent price that would be compatible with your car. Can buy one from a reputable seller that imports/sells these on ebay or a local place if you live close to where one is. A quick question, your car is in a switch over year, what I mean by this is that the trans in this year can either have axles that fit over stubs coming from the front diff or axles that pop into the front diff. If you could let us know what you have for front axles that would be a huge help to help you narrow down what you actually need to get. There are usdm cars that have 3.9 final drive trannies, but there are many jdm NA 3.9 trannies with a 3.9 final drive with lower miles that would be easier to get. I can provide some info if you would like.

Hi, the 08 trans won't work because of the speedo gear not being installed, too much work to open up the trans, install the parts and reseal it, plus front stubs would need to be installed along with new front axle seals in order to work with your current front axles. Now is your rear diff shot as well or just the trans? If it is just the trans, then these are the years and models to find a trans from. 97- early 99 legacy gt sedan 2.5 4.11, 2.5 rs 98-2001 4.11, 98-early 2003 forester 4.11 and 97-2002 outback 2.5 4.11 (5th gear is shorter which is 0.871 compared to the 0.780 of the other cars listed, means slightly higher rpm's on the highway). If you find a trans in the 04 outback or 04 forester that has axles that pop into the front diff of the trans, just find axle stubs from an older impreza/legacy 4eat trans 96-99 and get front axle seals and you will be set. If you have any questions about this, let us know here.

Hi, your car has a 3.9 final drive in the trans and rear diff. You have a number of options, usdm or jdm route. What I would do is look at some reputable sellers on ebay that sell subaru jdm manual transmissions and get a NA 3.9 push style transmission from like 99-early 2004. There are plenty of ones available for a good price. If you live close to one, give them a call and see what they have available for 99-early 2004 subaru NA push style clutch with a 3.9 final drive. Let us know if you have more questions.

There are NO other 5 spds that will work other than a subaru specific transmission. Your car has a 3.9 final drive so that is what you need to look for. Years and models to look at are: 96-2003 impreza wagon 5 spd 3.9, base legacy L sedan 97-99 I believe possibly 2000-2003 as well, and then there is the jdm route which there are 5 spd 3.9 final drive trannies with much lower miles for anywhere from $550 - $700 shipped from any of the reputable online sellers that sell like on ebay (have plenty to choose from). Would beat a junk yard trans with high miles even if it is only $100-$250 because of the mileage and being fresher overall. Let us know if you have any questions.

Unhappy JDM Legacy GT 2.0 Clutch?

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum but I recently bought a 2003 Legacy GT 2.0 L Spec B with the five speed manual and its clutch is cooked. I cannot seem to find anything specific to this car in terms of parts compatibility. I donīt need a new transmission but I do need a new clutch kit. Is the clutch the same as a WRX or STI clutch with a 5MT or am I going to have to find a unicorn part?

Those were never released in North America so it's not likely many people here would know. If it's a push type slave cyl, then a 5 speed push type clutch should work. If it's a pull type slave cyl, then a pull type 5 speed clutch should work. Since these cars were popular in Japan and Australia I'd check with people in those regions to know for sure.

Default can i inter change a 2003 impreza and 2003 outback trans?

so i have a 2003 Impreza TS that i got as a parts car. it has 173,000 kms on the odometer. i got it because my 2003 outback has 340,000 kms on the odometer and a blown clutch so i figured i might as well just swap in the lower mileage engine and trans. i know that they both use the 5mt transmission so i know they would fit properly. my only worry is that i know that the fifth gear in the Impreza is taller than the stock fifth gear in the Outback. if i do the swap will this little difference cause any problems or make any differences?
