manual transmission compatibility?
I have been searching for a chart that tells me which transmssions were interchangeable with subarus.... have not found any info. In particular, I have a 2000 2.5 Impreza RS manual trans here and wonder which other years and possible models it would fit - can anyone help?
thanks! florian

now, in semi answering myself, do i correctly assume that all subaru 5mt transmissions are interchangeable as long as one is happy with the gear ratios (which seem to be unique to the RS, although I havent found the legacy non gt ratios)?

Not all Subaru 5spds are interchangable. One difference you have to take in to consideration is which ones are push and which ones use pull clutches.
Then there's rear diffs and ect ect. |

The 2.5RS 5spd runs a 4.111FD in that year; 00. You can get a Forester NA 5spd and it'll work. You can use an Legacy Outback NA 5spd and it'll work. You can use a newer 02-04 2.5RS and '05 2.5RS Sport and it'll work. You can use oldskool 93-96 Impreza WRX/STi non-RA and it'll work if you use the clutch made for the tranny. You can even use the '05 LGT turbo tranny but have to install the spur gear for speedometer. I run a '04 JDM WRX STi DCCD 6spd/R180 on my '91 EJ22T block with 6spd clutch. This is WRX STi 6spd tranny on a Legacy EJ22T block, which is over 10yrs difference. Can even mate this 6spd onto the Subaru H6's currently! |

Same question, different model
I have a 2004 Impreza outback sport. I need to find a replacement for a manual transmission. I'm having no luck at finding one, so I'm looking at other Subarus.
Locally I've found a 2003 legacy, a 2003 Impreza, a 2002 Forrester, and a 2004 Forrester. All with manual transmissions. Are any of these compatible with my car? Or is there a resource I can turn to to find out? |

The only issues with compatibility are push vs pull type clutch on the 5 speed trans. So you need to find out which type you have, replace with the same type and make sure you get the correct clutch for it. The other compatibility issue is with the 6 speed swap into 5 speed car as they require other parts to make them work. Try searching Subaru trans code list in google. Look for one from RalliSpec. They have the codes broken down into years and clutch type. It's a lot of work to switch from one type to the other.

Best to match clutch type (push or pull) AND front diff ratio to rear diff ratio. Many places on this forum and online to show the trans codes, info and years that work. |

The Legacy GT and Impreza RS have a taller 5th gear, 1-4 are all the same. I know, I have had an Outback trans in my Legacy GT and will be putting one in for a bit so I can drive the car while getting my correct trans worked on. |

I was stating it's difficult to switch from push to pull type or vice versa. Which isn't as easy as just bolting it in. |

98 legacy trans into 98 impreza
I bought a 98 impreza 2.2l 5MT, I am also wondering about trans swaps. I cant find another 98 impreza 5speed trans around but there is a 98 legacy 2.2l 5mt and i am wondering if that is the same final drive ratio as my 98 impreza.

comparability with trans from other cars
I just recently bought a 98 2.2 impreza hatch 5spd manual and it has a super old transmission that I want to replace but I am in on a super tight budget so I have been getting my parts off of junkyard cars. Because of this I don't really have the option to look only for Subaru parts. I was wondering what other cars have a five speed that would fit and work with my engine.

I believe a 2.2L Legacy is the same as your trans. There are lists here and online to help out.

JDM Legacy GT 2.0 Clutch?
Hello everyone, I am new to this forum but I recently bought a 2003 Legacy GT 2.0 L Spec B with the five speed manual and its clutch is cooked. I cannot seem to find anything specific to this car in terms of parts compatibility. I donīt need a new transmission but I do need a new clutch kit. Is the clutch the same as a WRX or STI clutch with a 5MT or am I going to have to find a unicorn part?

Those were never released in North America so it's not likely many people here would know. If it's a push type slave cyl, then a 5 speed push type clutch should work. If it's a pull type slave cyl, then a pull type 5 speed clutch should work. Since these cars were popular in Japan and Australia I'd check with people in those regions to know for sure. |

can i inter change a 2003 impreza and 2003 outback trans?
so i have a 2003 Impreza TS that i got as a parts car. it has 173,000 kms on the odometer. i got it because my 2003 outback has 340,000 kms on the odometer and a blown clutch so i figured i might as well just swap in the lower mileage engine and trans. i know that they both use the 5mt transmission so i know they would fit properly. my only worry is that i know that the fifth gear in the Impreza is taller than the stock fifth gear in the Outback. if i do the swap will this little difference cause any problems or make any differences?
