Default Worthy of rescue bugeye

In late October of our current year, 2018 that is, I came across a for sale thread for a clean looking bugeye here on Nasioc. I private messaged the previous owner expressing interest and requested additional information. In a matter of weeks the seller and I had an agreement and the 02 bugeye became mine.

https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho...1&highlight=al

The car was in Alabama, having a broken timing belt meant I would have to have it transported to New York, where the car is now.

I was excited as soon as I saw it in person for the first time. The car is completely rust free and all original with only a few exceptions. Here are the pictures I took the day it arrived after it came off the transport.

The car will be a toy, I plan on holding on to it and preserve it. It will only be driven on good weather days and will not be driven on salted roads. The car arrived in late November and sat till last week when I had some time to start working on it. The previous owner had decided to sell the car after timing belt failure. Knowing that was the problem I went at it and here is what I found.

And that’s where we are at the moment, a seized cog bearing caused the right side intake cam gear to implode. Chances are there are bent valves.
I actually want to install a cam gear and timing belt and try to start it to see if it’ll run. I’m prepared to remove the heads if needed and see where I go from here. I’m trying to find a working right side intake cam gear and timing belt to install and try to start the motor. If you have the parts I need and have no use for them I’d appreciate it if you can donate them or let me borrow them.
I did pick up a used FP HTA68 that I plan to use after it goes for rebuild.

Good luck with the build. The car looks like it's in pretty decent shape. As far as the engine goes you're probably better off yanking it and doing a rebuild.

With the miles that are on it and the turbo upgrade you would be ahead just to start fresh, rather then messing around with installing used parts to see if it will run. You may do more damage.

I've got an almost new cam gear I don't need anymore. It's all yours if you want it. Currently in the process of rescuing my own bugeye. PM me.

Pm sent Morton, thanks for the super generous offer.

HorsePoogas, you are probably correct. I want to try to start the motor, if it runs poorly I will pull the motor, take the heads off and decide what direction to take from there. Previous owner stated there was no oil consumption before timing failure. Not afraid of high mile boosted 2.0
I still don’t know what power plant the car will end up with.

Tdagen, thank you, I like it too.

At least a bent valve or two, but I would probably install a belt and idler and see what kind of compression it has. If it was good, you could check for any metal in the oil and at least have it running enough to maneuver around before the build. Congrats on the find, isn't it great having a rust free car?

wish i had some parts to donate, but my old lump motor was sold for $150 canadian.

thats like the price of 2 bigmacs in the usa....

you would have been able to rebuild the driverside head or just swap it out and that engine would have been all good.... doh..

ok trick question here, how did they get the car up on the truck, if the car can't move on its own power?

this all looks really great!

Trueno, the transport vehicle is rigged with all types of toys but they just use a winch to pull it up the ramps and unload it.
I had a complete motor that spun a bearing off one of my Saabarus but gave it to a friend to rebuild for his car a few weeks before the bugeye purchase. He offered it back but I didn’t want to do that.
MortonCharbo sent me a cam gear, I ordered a $17 timing belt off eBay, I’ll be ready to try and run it real soon.

Thank you MortonCharbo.

No worries man. Anything to keep a bugeye going. I just added the red button to mine a few days ago. Let me know if you need any other parts and I'll see if I have em. Here's a pic of mine so far.

Awesome, wish my bugeye was a wagon. Dude thank you for your extreme generosity. Plan is to install the intake cam gear you sent and thank you for the bolt and the tool too. Throw a timing belt at it and try to start it. Then go from there, if I end up dropping a jdm ej205 in it it’ll be avcs enabled.

SAVE THE BUGEYES!!

I have an 02 sedan, completely rust-free. Spent most of it's life in some rich dude's garage as his fair-weather Sunday driver. It's not my daily either; I plan on keeping it forever. It's my third bugeye. I've had it since 2014 and it's currently got 15,000 miles on it. Bought it with 4759 miles.

Wow, do you have a thread for it ? I’d like to see it. I hope you take good care of it.

I have two other Subarus, both are 05 Saabarus.
My black wagon is a fair weather only vehicle. It is also rust free as it was from Georgia.

My desert silver wagon has been a Long Island vehicle since new and has seen salted roads yearly, it’s my daily driver beater.

My GD fascination started in 2006 when I sold my tricked out 2003 Mini Cooper S and purchased my first Saabaru.

Here is my old Subarus.

My first bugeye, a jdm STi ver 8 swapped wagon, should’ve never sold it.

My 06 wrx, what a ****ing nightmare, happy it’s gone, no more Subaru 2.5 turbo for me. Never again, 2L reliability for ever.

My first Saabaru with my first bugeye, actually sold both cars the same day, still regret it.

The black Saabaru was a very neglected car when I purchased it, paid too much for it and spent a fair amount of cash rebuilding it. No regrets, I have what I wanted, a jdm STi swapped Saabaru.

The desert silver aero showed up for sale near where I live with a broken motor and was so cheap I could not pass on it. I was sick of driving my naturally aspirated outback, needed a boosted daily.

I do not, but I should make one. When I bought the car in 2014 I wasn't very active on the boards. Still not, really. I just check in every now and then. But I do have some pics from the day I picked it up, one of these days I'll put them in a thread. I'll PM you if\when I do.

It's got an APS SR40 turbo, APS front mount, APS CAI, Perrin Catless UP, Cobb cat back. Cobb (StopTech really) BBK. Whiteline front and rear bars and endlinks. Some OZ superleggeras. EDM HID projector headlights. Custom dyno tune. Still on the stock injectors, which is holding it back, but I plan on replacing them and getting a catless DP and a retune in the near future. Gotta get it lowered on something. I'm in no rush, it's a slow moving project, lol. They're so fun to drive though! And I agree with you about the 2.0L vs 2.5L. Something about that little EJ20 (Or 207 if you're lucky, lol).

Those are a few nice Subies you've had there. Especially like the swapped GD. I had a WRB sedan and I loved it, regretted selling it and started looking around for another one. Found my current 02 on a (get this) Estate Sale website. The guy was moving to the city and was selling everything he owned basically because he was going from this huge house in Berkeley Heights NJ to a small (gigantic by NYC standards, I'm sure) condo in Manhattan.

Yes please, message me when you have a thread for it. Sounds far along already, slow build is fun too.
My current project bugeye is also a slow mover. I have accumulated some parts for it the last couple of weeks.
My friend who purchased my wrb bugeye wagon stopped by to give me the pink front springs and STi take off rear springs I had on the wagon when I sold it to him. I appreciate the return of my springs, I like them.
Also picked up a billet aluminum timing belt guide.
And an STi catless up pipe.
A Kartboy short shifter kit with bushings and knob.
Oh and a Stromung 2.5” intermediate pipe to go with a like new STi take off axleback I’ve been hoarding.
I’ll post pictures over the weekend.

I picked up a 2003 bugeye in the exact same condition as yours. Seized idler gear which exploded the intake cam. I went through all the effort to pull the motor and tear off the head only to find out that there were no bent valves. It seems this sort of failure can mean instantaneous lockup and save your valves.

I think its worth it in your case to slap on a new belt and gear first and just see if it runs. I mean you have to buy both of those things whether the valves are bent or not right?

A very good friend of mine who is a car mechanic also encouraged me to try to run it before going straight to tear down. He has seen the same situation more than once and s has also seen it ending with and without valve damage. I purchased an inexpensive timing belt and a member sent me a cam gear. My plan is to install those parts and see if it’ll run properly. I’ll decide what to do once I know the outcome from that test.
Thanks for the encouragement, we shall see if my lucky stars are in total alignment.

If fit needs a re-build - hybrid or stay 2L?

Don't see many MBP sedans...any more.

In no rush Morton, roads are a salt mess around here, car will only be driven on ideal road conditions. Sorry to keep you hanging.

Went for a mountain bike ride, it was beautiful in the woods.

Added a titanium cog to the car.

Here are some of the parts I picked up recently with my project bugeye in mind.
