I don't see it happening. They are a very small company and are focused on Skyactive X. And while that may yield more torque it's really more of a focus on improving MPG.

It might be possible to put the turbo 2.5 motor in the 3 but I'm not sure they will spend the resources, time, and money. The demand for performance econoboxes is pretty low.

Apparently they stated the turbo engine they have does drop right into the Mazda 3, but they have no plans for such a version.

Sounds like a dare to me.

I really like this car. Seems to be setting the bar for its segment. Waiting to see what the Skyactiv X version brings to the table in the future. Hoping this will bring success (and increased sales) to Mazda across the board as the rest of their vehicles head in this direction. Maybe that will allow them to bring back more sporting cars into their lineup.

Default Mazda3 'Hyper' Hatch Could Happen With AWD, 2.5-Liter Engine

Quote:
Mazda is developing a hotter version of the new Mazda 3, expected to get the green light before 2021 - but it might not come to Europe.

In launching the fourth-generation small car in Australia, visiting programme manager Kota Beppu said he wants a “hyper” version of the hatchback.

“I’m a car guy, so I myself want to drive a high performance Mazda 3… I’ll do my best,” he said. Although he claimed the project had not been officially signed off, insiders suggest that is a formality. Beppu said there was keen interest from “most developed countries”, including the US, Japan and Australia.

While various drivetrain configurations have been discussed, it is the turbocharged 2.5-litre engine from larger US-spec Mazdas that is the most likely powerplant. “Generally speaking we would use the motor to get more performance,” Beppu said in shunning a hot hybrid version.

With 247bhp the 2.5’s output falls short of the latest crop of hot hatches, but 310lb ft of torque brings its own challenges. “The Mazda 3 is a light vehicle, so if there is too much power and we keep it as front-wheel drive, there is the torque steer phenomenon happening,” he said, nominating the all-wheel drive that’s already developed for the new torsion beam rear end as an obvious solution.

Is the German limousine still a byword for luxury? We're about to find...
Beppu added that he doesn’t see any high performance Mazda 3 as a track-focused tearaway, instead suggesting the emphasis would be comfort and everyday road use. “It needs to be responsible and friendly… more friendly than a Golf GTI,” he said, though adding: “it should be fast”.

He referred to such a car as a “hyper” Mazda 3 rather than a hot hatch. It remains unclear if the brand will therefore use the MPS or Mazdaspeed branding for such a model.

But it is CO2 that is one of the biggest challenges for a hot 3, something that could challenge its European viability. The forced induction 2.5-litre engine is not currently sold in the region, and might not meet the efficiency requirements to do so.

The is clear interest from the crucial US market, however, which has its own R&D centre in Los Angeles and has reportedly created a proof-of-concept machine under the radar of the brand’s Hiroshima head office.

Mazda last sold a hot 3 with the second generation car in 2013 (above), under the MPS tag in Europe and badged as a

Pretty sure this journalist mistook the Japanese word "haipo" (short for "high powered") for "hyper".

I'd love to see the existing 2.5l turbo show up in the 3, I'd buy one immediately even if it still only came in an auto configuration. The new generation is tempting enough as-is.

Nissan has a 2.5 AWD Altima.. Last I saw they (2019) are being discounted already and not moving very well..

I think it might happen, it’s not going to be high strung MazdaSpeed

Hotter Mazda 3 with turbo engine might take on VW GTI

Sean Szymkowski

Mazda is reportedly keen to put a bit of zoom-zoom back into the Mazda 3. A hotter version of the latest 3 hatchback may arrive in the near future to do battle with the Volkswagen GTI.

A hotter Mazda 3 hatchback may arrive before 2021, according to a Thursday report from Autocar. Kota Beppu, project manager for the new 3, said he personally wants to do a "high-performance Mazda 3" and added he will do his best to make it happen.

According to the report, the project hasn't been given the OK yet, but the car is still far along in development. The Mazda research and development center in Los Angeles is rumored to have built a proof-of-concept model that top executives in Japan have studied.

It's unlikely such a car would receive the Mazdaspeed name. Last November, Mazda CEO Akira Marumoto ruled out a new Mazdaspeed 3 and explained it has everything to do with the brand focusing on its more premium image.

From what we can gather, this car could instead be a premium Mazda 3 with the brand's 2.5-liter turbo-4 under the hood. The engine makes 227 horsepower (250 hp on 93-octane gasoline) and 310 pound-feet of torque in the CX-5 crossover SUV and 6 mid-size sedan. Motor Authority reached out to Mazda USA for comment and Drew Cary, senior manager for brand communications, said that a turbo model hasn't been confirmed yet.

"We encourage people to ask for it, though. Our planners and executives are watching and listening to fans," Cary added.

Beppu underscored the notion that a hotter Mazda 3 would not be a track machine, but rather something performance oriented and comfortable—friendlier even than the Golf GTI. But, "it should be fast," he added. The project manager added front-wheel drive is likely a non-starter, so expect a hotter 3 to feature the new all-wheel-drive system to channel power to all four wheels.

While we'd love to see the return of a Mazdaspeed 3, the idea of an AWD Mazda 3 GTI competitor is music to our ears. Let's hope it happens.

Considering the skyactive-X version of the 2 liter brought the power up to the level of the 2.5 skyactive-G, I think a X version of the 2.5 out putting 220-230 hp in a 3,022 lb car would hit the spot between enthusiasts and regular drivers.

Why didn't they compare the Golf Sportwagen 4Motion, either manual or DSG, with the Mazda?

News Mazda3 Recalled Because Its Wheels Might Fall Off

Mazda3 owners, take note.
We've driven the Mazda3 and we know for a fact that it's a force to be reckoned with – a premium package in a not-so-premium price point. However, it seems like there's an assembly defect in the compact car that would be hard to notice.

In an NHTSA document, Mazda North American Operations has issued a safety recall for 2019 Mazda3 units "which may have had a partial gap between the hub bolts and hub flanges during assembly." As a result, the lug nuts might loosen up completely and when not noticed, the wheels might fall off under continuous normal driving conditions.

Affected units were made from September 25, 2018 to April 19, 2019. A total of 25,003 Mazda3 units are affected by the said recall, which makes up one percent of the entire Mazda3 population. The cars affected were either assembled in Japan or Mexico plants.

VIN ranges for the affected cars are from JM1BPACM2K1100042 to JM1BPAMM0K1136438 and from 3MZBPAEM7KM100048 to 3MZBPAEM7KM100048. Fortunately, there have been no accidents related to the said recall.

Mazda3 owners are scheduled to be notified by August 6, 2019, but since you're reading this article, you might want to check your car (if you're a 2019 Mazda3 owner) or tell your friends about it. Mazda dealerships offer the retightening service, free of charge.

For those who are planning to buy a Mazda3, you don't need to worry as the NHTSA document states that retightening of wheel nuts have already started in both the Japanese and Mexican plants since April 19, 2019 and May 3, 2019, respectively. But just in case, you can always double check your prospect car's lug nuts before you sign the dotted line.

I have only driven in a car one time with loose lug nuts, and the wobble was very easy to identify. How can you get to the point that a wheel falls off without noticing that? People have to be so damn inattentive to have that occur.

Amen. I've driven a wobbly Outback. Just pulled over and tightened it. Then had the broken lug replaced the next day.

Considering how loud people blast their music inside their cars, I wouldn't be surprised if their butt dynos are as numb as their deaf ears.

The recall is just to re-torque the lugs. Some were not torqued properly.

It's literally that simple.

Agree, I'd like to see that. I think it would be my next car. My 2.5 G already feels like it makes respectable power (just due to the way it delivers torque), it's really not far off from being a competent spocom in stock form.
