Borefest indeed. Not that I expected anything else from China.
I am really tired of the Mercs at this point

It was the first race that a midfield driver picked up the fastest lap.

The one in which Ferrari only cares about a single driver.

They are the king of bungle ups.

Instead of attacking as a team - they attack with one driver, ruining their chances. They could have attempted an undercut strategy, and instead let themselves be undercut by Verstappen. What should have been a 3-4 (with a possible later stage fight with Verstappen), became a 3-5.

Eh, he corrected some oversteer and another car was right there. That was nothing more than a first lap racing incident. Plenty of other drivers have had the same happen to them with no penalty, or certainly not such a harsh penalty. It looked dramatic the way the tires made contact and the damage to the McLarens but in terms of what Kvyat did, it wasn't dangerous and malicious.

Ferrari continues to Ferrari. Although not that it mattered too much at the very front. Merc continues to Merc. The Constructor's is already theirs and Hamilton will surely best Bottas over the season unless he has 2016-esque reliability.

See you guys next year.

I had already tuned out, even before the start of this season. Have followed some bits and pieces here and there but...... Nothing* to see here.

* Not really "nothing".... just nothing truly exciting.

They had to hype up the Netflix series to draw attention back in, only to feed snoozefests to start the season I'd much rather watch the former vs the latter. At least you saw more of all the cars on the grid, and more stories behind the drivers / teams.

According to comments by Gunther, they are having major problems turning the tires on/ keeping heat in them.

Not much I can disagree with here. Since they have legislated out meaningful development during the season.

Yeah, I'm not calling anyone in a Red Bull "midfield" anything. They aren't a part of Formula 1.5 or 'best of the rest.' Gasly's underperformed thus far but it's not 2008, Red Bull is the establishment.

And to be honest, even if a squarely midfield driver got fastest lap, that still wouldn't be a shocker. Someone can throw the kitchen sink at it with nothing to lose and a free pit stop and fresh set of tires.

could it be that he's a midfield driver in a front of the pack car?

That's more accurate. Gasly looked pretty good extracting some decent performances from what everyone saw as a mid-to-back marking STR chassis. He looked better when you write off half the races as DNF's where his end finishing position is unknown. Looked even better with Hartley as a teammate.

It's just like when Vettel up and left Red Bull and they suddenly had to promote someone unexpectedly. It doesn't matter if you're ready or not, someone from STR is going to plug the hole. Sink or swim.

Personally I thought Hartley got the short end of the stick. I didn't get the feel that Gasly was that much better than him - and I really appreciate you stating the above -- the STRs almost never had clean or complete races to properly get the correct analysis.

I just heard that F1 will be having a Fan Fest here in Chicago this summer sometime. I'm hoping we can get tickets and go meet some of the drivers!

Just in case anyone is interested, Super Formula will broadcast all the Qualifying and Races on the Youtube Channel : Lets Go Racing.
IMO: SF is a little more exciting than F1

Miami scraps downtown F1 race for another location:

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/m...adium/4375219/

In May 2017, Formula 1 owners Liberty joined forces with billionaire local businessman Stephen Ross in a joint effort to hold a Miami GP in 2019, but the planned 10-year deal has been repeatedly delayed.

Miami hosted a Fan Festival last year on Biscayne Boulevard, featuring F1 show runs on the streets that have previously hosted IndyCar, IMSA and Formula E races. However, plans for a full-blown Formula 1 event to run on the streets and the adjacent Port Miami area stalled in City Hall due to opposition from local residents and businesses, and the likelihood of multiple law suits over the disruption the event would cause.

Most recently, a vote on the proposed downtown event was deferred in City Hall again last month, and this appears to have been the final straw for the plan.

Now, Ross and his team has switched focus to bring F1 to a site near the Hard Rock Stadium venue in Miami Gardens, a 65,000-seat venue to the north of the city that will play host to the 2020 Super Bowl. It hopes to create a “world-class racing circuit” in the land surrounding the stadium, and recently hosted the Miami Open tennis tournament for the first time.

Former Chip Ganassi Racing executive Tom Garfinkel, now vice chairman and CEO of Miami Dolphins and the stadium, told the Miami Herald that the disruption caused by a downtown event would negate the benefits to the city.

“We want to do something great for Miami,” said Garfinkel. “But unfortunately when we finally received the detailed report of what it would take to build out a street circuit each year, the multiple weeks of traffic and construction disruption to the port, Bayfront Park and the residents and businesses on Biscayne Boulevard would have been significant; which Steve and I felt defeated the purpose.

“A lot would have to happen for us to be able to do it, but we have over 250 acres of land so adding an F1 race to where Hard Rock Stadium and the Miami Open sit means we can create a world-class racing circuit that is unencumbered by existing infrastructure.

“It also means better ingress and egress, better amenities, unprecedented sight-lines, and opportunities for the best hospitality anywhere in racing. We only want to do it if we can create world-class racing, a great fan experience, and a lot of value for Miami.”
