Toyota Is Thinking About A Manual Supra But Doesn't Seem Sold On The Idea
Even before the latest-generation Toyota Supra premiered, there has been hopeful talk that a six-speed manual would soon be offered alongside the current eight-speed automatic.

Hopes were heightened last week following confirmation that the entry-level BMW Z4 sDrive20i in Europe with which the Supra shares its underpinnings will come standard with a manual.

While BMW has yet to say whether or not the six-cylinder variants of the Z4 could also get a stick shift, Automobile reached out to Toyota to see whether the release of a manual Z4 also means that a manual Supra is on the agenda.

“We may have heard a time or two (or more) that there’s a desire for a manual transmission in the Supra,” a Toyota spokesperson said. “However, we’re confident in the performance of the current setup . . . We feel it’s the optimal combination for the U.S. market at this time and we’re anxious for customers to drive the new Supra and experience it for themselves. We’ll be sure to check back into the conversation at that time and see what people have to say.”

Evidently, Toyota is thinking about offering the new Supra with a manual transmission but it doesn’t seem sold on the idea of such a model, at least not in the United States. We imagine that if the Supra does get a six-speed option, this transmission option would initially be rolled out to select markets, perhaps including Japan where Toyota knows the Supra has a strong cult following among hardcore driving enthusiasts.

I can't blame them for not selling a manual from a profit perspective. One of the reasons why manual Mark IV Supras are worth so much is because so few were made (for the US market at least) 25 years ago.

I suppose toyota doesn't feel the need to treat the supra like the LFA for lexus where they're just doing something to flex and build brand recognition since toyota isn't exactly hurting for cash.

They would also need new certifications for crash testing since the floorpan and trans tunnel would change. Lot of cash to put up considering the option wont really yield extra profit.

There will be a Z4 manual in BMW 4 cyl version so I bet the new Toyota 86/BRZ will be 4 cyl version Supra, They will pump out as many cars as they can on this platform for profits.

Yeah, and there's another nail in the coffin for manual transmissions... not just the re-certification process, but the fact that the actual procedure for manual transmissions puts it a disadvantage. Forced shift points in manuals, but automatics get to shift whenever the manufacturer programs it to? No doubt in my mind that automobile manufacturers game the system with shift points in automatic transmissions. Drive any very modern automatic and it's obvious.

They need to forget about making money on the Supra.. this cars only goal for a while should be to repair the decades of boring Toyota gave us. Give us the Manual and let the assumptions about Toyota get back to the fun of the 80's. It will take time and it will cost money, but it will reinvigorate the whole line up.

I believe it will come as I believe the launch model is nothing more than a starting point for a car that's probably going to see several different performance versions added over it's 6 year or more life cycle but Toyota is playing things right by not admitting so. They want to sell as many Supra's today as they can and telling people a manual is coming in a couple of years is a sure fire way put some prospective buyers into a waiting pattern.

There is a difference between cost and actually selling. Also remember that the main point of these vehicles now is magazine bragging rights, and right now the DCT/XSpeed autos are faster.

The current Toyota Supra is a good sports car but its use of a BMW powertrain has long rubbed some enthusiasts the wrong way. However, the Supra could win over some detractors if rumors about a manual version prove to be true.

To the surprise of many, Toyota decided to launch the new Supra exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission despite acknowledging before the car’s unveiling that it had developed a manual version. A new report now claims that the car manufacturer has given the green light to the manual Supra and that it could launch this year.

Speaking with The Drive, an unnamed Toyota dealership source apparently said that the car is “confirmed”. This follows on from a report in late 2021 that suggested Toyota’s plan was to initially only offer the entry-level 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder model with a six-speed but that the decision has since been made to instead offer it for the flagship 3.0-liter turbo-six.

If true, a manual version of the Toyota 3.0 could serve as the perfect rival to the forthcoming Nissan Z which will be offered with both a Mercedes-sourced automatic transmission and the same six-speed manual as the 370Z.

As if rumors about a manual Supra weren’t enough to get you excited, there is also talk about the car manufacturer reportedly readying a high-performance GRMN variant that could borrow the 3.0-liter twin-turbo S58 inline-six of the BMW M3, where it produces 473 hp and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque in the standard version and 503 hp and 479 lb-ft (649 Nm) of torque in the Competition.

After months of rumours, Toyota has confirmed it will introduce a long-mooted manual gearbox option for its Supra flagship sports car.
The Toyota Supra was launched in 2019, sharing much of its powertrain and chassis with the similarly positioned BMW Z4.

The headline engine option is a 335bhp 3.0-litre straight-six, and an entry-level 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine was added to the ranks in 2020.

But all Supra models – and all versions of the technically identical BMW Z4 – currently use an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. Importantly, its arch rivals, the Porsche 718 Cayman GTS and BMW M2 Competition, are available with a manual option, as is the more junior Toyota GR 86 sports coupé.

The firm said: "Toyota Gazoo Racing sports car customers and fans have spoken and we’ve listened. A Toyota GR Supra with an all-new, tailor-made manual transmission is coming soon."


The new gearbox in question is thought to be a six-speed item, as used by Gazoo Racing's other sports cars, the GR 86 and Toyota GR Yaris, but a supplier has not yet been named.

It is also unconfirmed whether Toyota will offer the manual with both four- and six-cylinder engines. BMW only offers a manual option for its straight-six sports cars, the M2, M3 and M4 (the latter two not in Europe).

There's no word yet on whether the manual will represent a saving over the automatic car, nor whether the stick-shift option will come alongside chassis or powertrain tweaks aimed at providing a more driver-focused character.

So far, Toyota has only gone so far as to reveal that the manual car will be marked out visually by a new red Supra badge at the rear, and promised that it has been "engineered to offer enthusiasts something that is closer to the Gazoo Racing DNA and will enhance the driving experience". More details are due in the coming weeks.

Manual GR Supra Officially Teased To Show Toyota Gives A Shift

"Is that a Supra?" Not just any Supra, but one with a clutch pedal. Indeed, after years of rumors, Toyota has finally confirmed the rear-wheel-drive coupe will get a manual gearbox. The do-it-yourself transmission is labeled as being an "all-new, tailor-made" 'box, which suggests it's not borrowed from BMW's parts bin. That's not all too surprising since M Performance cars with the "40i" suffix all have automatics.

Aside from showing the three-pedal box, Toyota reveals the car's rear end where the "Supra" lettering is finished in red. The striking logo will be reserved for the version equipped with the manual gearbox. Additional details will be disclosed in the coming weeks, and in the meantime, the company ends its brief press release with the #savethemanual hashtag.

If the rumor mill is to be trusted, the world premiere is scheduled to take place on April 28 when the Gazoo Racing Supra with a stick shift will break cover. It'll allegedly be offered exclusively with the six-cylinder engine, which might cannibalize sales of the automatic-only BMW Z4 M40i. The Bavarians do offer a manual for their sporty roadster, but only for the lesser versions with the four-cylinder engine.

At home in Japan, Toyota is reportedly planning to sell a Matte White Edition with a bespoke body paint and a tan leather interior. Meanwhile, the teaser released today comes from the company's European division, thus revealing the three-pedal GR Supra is earmarked for the Old Continent. We're expecting the sports car to land in the United States as well where it'll join the GR Corolla hot hatch.
As to whether BMW is planning its own manual Z4 M40i, we wouldn't get our hopes up just yet. The Toyota Supra is more along the lines of a sports car whereas its sister model has a GT profile for which an automatic makes more sense. It's not the end of the world considering the new M2 is months away from being unveiled, complete with a 6MT.

I'm having a hard think about this thing but I don't think I'll drive it enough to justify to tying up $55-$60k in a car. I'll never buy a car as an investment.

But think of it as a sign off car. 6MT 100% Pure ICE going away in just a few years. What a final one, if you picked this up. No wasted mileage driving it to work or doing dumb **** like commuting and errands. Strictly for aggresssion in the corners on the weekends.
