Luckily there's minimal chance of them giving us an unequal length header and single scroll, journal bearing turbo this time

I still wish the EJ257 came with an equal length, twin scroll header and ball bearing turbo like the EJ207. The EJ207 heads would have been nice too.

Very interesting. I've (we've) been waiting for this since 2015. I hope they knock it out of the park.

They've had training on the 2.4 Ascent motor and were "told" that the STI is getting that. I seriously doubt they have had any training on anything SGP STI.

Exactly. But it's not going to be "that" but "something like that".

If this is apparently so "close" - why haven't we even seen any sort of mule/test vehicle yet? There were sightings of the 2015 way back in the summer of 2013 doing hot weather testing before the LA Auto Show reveal that November. At this point, it's going to be shown next year sometime at the earliest and probably be a 2022 or 2023 MY car.

The new LXT is out. It wouldn't be hard to hide an STI drivetrain in one and test mule away. Or in the existing multitudes of WRXs.

They know how their plans are leaked, and likely use it as part of their appetizer buffet. This time is different. Why.

If my fantasy is correct they are going to release an STI that'll put the EJ conversation to rest forever. And along with it all the built up disdain for the STi's anacronistic performance. They want to blow some brains out. It's their 20th year and they intend to make it memorable.

Like I said, they've done it before. No reason they can't do it again, and it is time.

For those who aren't still holding their breath... y'ain't no believer.

I find it weird too that so far there have been no mules spotted etc.
But you never know I guess. I do feel like lot more info would've been released by now though. I don't know.

All of that is irrelevant - every manufacturer, Subaru included, has had test vehicles rolling around prior to the announcement. In fact, letting the public "know" that they are testing it drums up initial hype of the new product. Like when they had the WRX mules rolling around southern California for all of the automotive media to take "spyshots" of. Everyone does this, and if they were truly testing something to be released on such short notice, we would've seen some smoke at this point already.

It's clearly going to be released further out at this point, we don't even have a legit concept car either yet too. Just some "VIZIV" things that are abstracts, not close to production ready concepts.

They need to move an entire year of product as well as those S209s. Yeah I'd keep the next WRX/STI under wraps until the very last second.

I could see this as a way to drop the 0-60 time and a way to give people options of a manual. The dsg golf was sooo boring to me though.

I could see them giving more news mid 2020/fall.

You're right though, very weird no news on 2021.

If it is DCT, that would be smart, as to appease to both audiences of auto vs manual.

Right; but, that doesn't mean it's training on the new STI. Just trying to keep "false" info from getting misunderstood.

It’ll go on sale spring 21 as a 22. Maybe sooner, probably not later.

I don’t have a great feeling about the future of the practical performance car segment in the US. Kinda wish this last gen WRX (I think it will be the last) would come sooner so it doesn’t end up as a BS CUV. “But you guys wanted a hatchback” they’ll say. “Doesn’t get more wagon than this!”

Whatever it may be, I think any hatch/wagon remotely close to the Levorg would be pretty cool to see in the US. I've always liked the styling and I think they'll hit it out of the park this time around.

Well that's exactly what I want. A Levorg with a stick. My fear is that the closest we'll come is some BS sporty crossover.

Do you mean a refreshed Levorg? I’ve seen a few articles mentioning a “new” Levorg, but it would only show a picture of the current one and I never saw any actual mention of a new Levorg beyond the headline.

Per the Viziv Tourer concept, a new Levorg is coming* that will share the new WRX/STI aesthetics, some sheet metal and probably WRX hardware (surely same as current.) So for it to come now would give a super early preview of the next gen WRX.

*I recall Subaru was undecided on whether they would actually build the car when asked about the production future of the Viziv Tourer.

They should've done this with the US EJ as well. Silver calipers and gold wheels!!
(From the type RA)

That didn't stop them with the 2008 or 2015 reveals, they had a fairly long wait before the "new" body styles hit dealerships and they were still selling the last gens for a bit. The S209 is a super limited specialty car too, so I doubt that an all new STI would really bite into those because people will be buying them to own a S209, not a ho hum run of the mill STI regardless of its performance. If S209 buyers really cared about performance, they'd get one of the dozen other cars out there that are better/faster for that kind of money.

Also - they're going to be revealing more info on the new the BRZ/86 this year. That meets the "performance" quota for them. And by god does the BRZ need all the help it can get.

Meh. It will get "improved" and people will flock to it. Then sales will wane over the years and the same ole folks will call it a failure no matter how Subaru/Toyota label it.

I'm curious to see if it's going to be based on the SGP or TNGA. All of the reports are saying that the SGP isn't really in line with what the car would be and that they're going with the TNGA for the platform, while using the FA24 engine. Which would make sense, since every SGP car is larger and heavier than the old 2005 Legacy platform they used previously.

I just personally hope they add about 1-2 inches of leg room by eliminating the useless back seats. I had to sell mine because my leg rested at the worst possible spot and it was infuriating because if the seat went back maybe another inch it would have been a perfect fit.
