Default Help LOUD Banging

Recently I started hearing this loud banging from under my car. Sound seems to be coming from under the shifter linkage area/passenger footwell area. It has only started at highway speeds in the rain, and goes away when I come to a complete stop. Will usually start again if I reach highway speeds. If I stay below 50mph it doesnít happen again.

I am unable to reproduce the problem in dry weather.

Can this be the driveshaft? Exhaust? Center diff? Iím at a loss.

Have you jacked the car up and looked underneath? It certainly sounds rotational and I would imagine that if it's causing THAT much noise it shouldn't be too hard to find. It sounds like something is getting hit against something hollow, maybe something wrapped around the driveshaft hitting your downpipe/exhaust?

I have gone under and looked around. Nothing is clearly hanging or loose. The noise is not persistent and goes away after I come to a complete stop/slow down and does not always re-appear again.

The last time this occurred was last April when it rained, and it didn’t happen again until this past week when it rained again and has no re-appeared since the rain stopped ???? so I’m really confused.

I’m going to get under the again and check everything and try and move the driveshaft around, check the carrier bearing.

My downpipe flange snapped where it bolts t the trans. I’m thinking that might be the downpipe smacking something

Holy crap dude!!

You gotta get under there and see what's up. HOPEFULLY it's just a broken tab for the downpipe, but you really need to tap, shake, rattle everything under there to find it.

Thanks! Iíll do my best. If I canít figure it out myself Iíll be dropping the car off for a few days at GST most likely. Iíll report back when I solve the problem. Just looking for ideas here and if anyone has had a similar noise!

I just hope itís not the center diff. I sounds and feels like something it banging/smacking the frame/exhaust underneath the car. Scary and strange.

If not the downpipe then the next thing I would check is the u-joints and the carrier bearing on the driveshaft along with the tranny mount and tranny subframe.

Either way, if you end up dropping it off at GST they'll get you sorted out. Great guys over there who know their stuff. Tell them we said hi, and that Mike's car is slow.

I believe I found the issue if anyone is interested.

Got under the car and couldn’t see any contact with the frame. I did find a spot where the driveshaft was banging the midpipe, directly under the drivers and passengers seat, which is exactly where I felt and heard the noise.

It is right where the carrier bearing sits, and the carrier bearing did have some play, but not much play downward. Only when I pushed upward. Still might need to be replaced, and unfortunately that required the entire driveshaft to be replaced.

The bracket on the downpipe was snapped off, so I had a welder fix it and position the exhaust with more clearance, hopefully this solves the problem!

Still Completely lost as to why I was only getting contact and noise in the rain????

Hopefully my issue is solved!

I was going to say this sounds very similar to when one of the bolts fell out of the bracket that holds the driveshaft up but it looks like you found it.
