Default 2021 Acura TLX Type S Sports Sedan Will Pack a Powerful Turbo V-6

Quote:
A redesigned version of the Acura TLX sedan is coming for the 2021 model year.

It will offer a Type S performance model, as previewed by the Type S concept car (pictured).

The standard TLX will arrive first with a starting price in the mid-$30,000 range, with the Type S going on sale later.

This story originally appeared in the May 2020 issue of Car and Driver, which was produced in February and early March. The information was gathered before the auto industry began feeling major effects of the coronavirus pandemic. As many automakers are now delaying or pausing development programs, the debut and on-sale dates reported here may change.

A full redesign is coming soon for Acura's best-selling sedan, the TLX. We expect the standard 2021 TLX will go on sale this summer with a base price in the mid-$30,000 range, followed by the exciting high-performance Type S variant early next year.

Underpinning the new model will be an all-new unibody designed exclusively for the TLX that ditches struts for a control-arm front suspension to improve handling and feel. The standard TLX powertrain will borrow the 10-speed automatic transmission and turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four from the current-generation Honda Accord but adds optional all-wheel drive. The Type S will bring some potency to the mix with a new turbocharged V-6, likely displacing 3.0 liters, that will provide a massive bump in power over the outgoing 3.5-liter V-6's 290 horses.

Amid the crossover takeover, Acura still does solid business with the TLX, selling twice as many of those as it does the ILX and RLX combined. And Americans buy more Ferraris, Lamborghinis, or McLarens than they do NSXs—far more. A performance-oriented Type S model bridges the gap between Acura's invisible $160,000 supercar and everything else the brand offers.

The entry-luxury-sedan class includes heavy hitters such as the BMW 3-series, Audi A4, and Mercedes-Benz C-class. It's a tough segment, and the appetite for sedans may continue to decline, leaving the handsome TLX unloved. But priced right, its odds of success are high.

Wish they would have elaborated more on Transmission.

All I know is the nine speed in 2020 Acura TLX v6 sucks, BIG TIME ,Enough where I would not get the V6. The 8 Speed in the 2.4 liter us better.

So their using the Ten Speed from Honda Accord with the new 2.0 liter. I hope they are not using the same automatic from the current V6..

I would bet they're going to use the 10 Speed mentioned here since it's already in the system: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a1...-clutch-pedal/

In the linked article, it also mentions the 9 speed, which is a ZF. And, if you follow along at home, the odd numbered ZFs suck donkey balls. The money is in the even geared ZF8. I don't think they make a ZF10.

Totally. The TLX is cool but don't want such a huge performance sedan.

TLX with any engine is boring.. I don't care if they put a V8 in there. Still would not be interested. Honda has completely missed the mark on performance cars after the RSX-R and S2K's were done. ex: CTR should've come in a 2 door form or at least with AWD..

An AWD sporty TLX would make a fine car - a nice car even. But taking the ILX from a NA luxury 9th gen Civic platform to a luxury 10th gen Civic platform with an AWD Type R drive train?

Perfection.

S type would be great if RWD or even AWD. R type owners constantly grumble about Front Drive. I might buy one if they don't try to UckFay you like Honda does R type, Told them go screw they will be calling me back soon I think but no thanks. I'm not paying list on anything since 2008

Afraid an ILX as envisioned would handily cannibalize sales from the TLX. And if Honda wants to compete with the other luxury brands mentioned - they need to offer a sporting AWD system in this model. But it likely will never happen.

Acura’s System is a “Sporting AWD System “.

Around since 2004. Acura Was first to Have Torque Vectoring ETC.

Here’s an Article from December and Video from Acura. They have two now, one for NA engines other Electric/ Hybrid. NSX has its own.

What Is SH-AWD? A Breakdown of the Least Understood Acura Acronym - MotorTrend
What if all-wheel drive could not only improve traction but also enhance dynamic performance? That's the goal of Acura's SH-AWD system. What does SH-AWD mean? It's an acronym for Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. By actively distributing power front to rear and side to side, SH-AWD makes driving on slick surfaces easier and powering through corners more fun.

So what is SH-AWD? Acura has two variations of the system: one for its gas-powered cars, and one for its electrically enhanced hybrids. Both use hardware and software to send power to the wheels that need it most, continually altering distribution depending on the situation. The result is more confidence and control from behind the wheel.

SH-AWD made its debut on the 2004 RL and has gone through multiple iterations since. The current fourth-generation system was integrated into the 2019 RDX, and it's lighter, faster, and more robust than before. But what is the difference between SH-AWD and AWD? Keep reading to find out.

How SH-AWD Works

Because the majority of SH-AWD Acuras are based on front-engine, front-wheel-drive platforms, power is initially and primarily directed through the transaxle to the front wheels—up to 90 percent when cruising straight at steady speeds. However, a driveshaft also routes power to a rear differential, on its way to the rear wheels.

Within that differential are various gear sets and clutch packs that control the amount of torque the rear wheels receive. Under hard acceleration, sensors detect rearward weight transfer and alter clutch engagement to direct up to 45 percent of power to the rear wheels. This reduces wheelspin and enhances traction for better acceleration.

The differential also controls power balance between the rear wheels—that is to say, it vectors torque. When sensors detect cornering forces, up to 70 percent of engine torque can be sent to the rear axle. Of that, 100 percent can be directed to the rear outside wheel, helping to push the vehicle forward. The result is an inward yaw moment that gives the feeling of rotation through a corner. This reduces the need for steering input, minimizes under- or oversteer, and allows power to be applied sooner. That's where SH-AWD gets its so-called "Super Handling" characteristics.

How Hybrid SH-AWD Works

SH-AWD functions differently in Acura hybrids like the MDX and RLX; there's no mechanical connection between the engine and the rear axle. Instead, each rear wheel is powered by an electric motor. These produce power independently and variably, in effect replacing the differential and clutches found in the mechanical SH-AWD setup. Again, sensors determine how much power is sent to either rear wheel, which still function to push the vehicle forward through a corner with inward yaw.

For the NSX supercar, hybrid SH-AWD works a bit differently—kind of like the standard hybrid system but flipped around and made better. In the NSX, two electric motors power the front wheels, with no mechanical connection to the mid-mounted engine. Augmenting that V-6, however, is a third electric motor that improves its responses and fills in torque as its twin turbochargers spool up. That power is sent through a rear transaxle and differential to the rear wheels. The NSX's front electric motors pull the car forward while the rear differential distributes the engine's torque between the rear wheels, providing that "Super Handling" sensation.

Future Acura Cars

Acura is fully committed to SH-AWD and considers it key to enhancing performance across its product range. SH-AWD will boost driving dynamics in Acura's future products, too—it's rumored that whatever may come from the Acura Type S concept will feature a version of the system. For now, SH-AWD helps when roads are wet or slippery, or when there's a string of corners to power through.

For more on how SH-AWD is different from other systems, check out this official deep dive video from Acura.

At this point I'd say it's too late for that.

In a further reminder that we are getting old way too fast, the 10th Gen Civic is already five years old, and we're probably due to see the 11th Gen next year. At this point they may as well wait and co-develop an ILX-successor on the next platform.

One might think, but the ILX is based on the much hated gen 9 Civic that was released in 2012 IIRC. Basing it on the old Civic might actually happen if they want to keep recycling the design.

Yeah, my point was that I'd prefer they not do that again, since it runs the risk of having a particularly outdated car in a very short time frame (especially if there is a major shift in the new Civic platform, as there was in the 10th Gen). Acura's biggest problem is that Honda doesn't usually invest enough in them to let them be as competitive as they could be; I don't generally think we should advocate that they continue to do that. They need a bespoke platform or two; and more importantly, at the very least, to share current platforms where they do exist instead of getting old scraps. If Hyundai and Kia can manage that much, than it's not too big an ask for Honda's luxury arm. The dual screen infotainment in the TLX/ILX is frankly embarassing next to Honda's current infotainment, and that's a matter of them not even investing enough in mid-cycle refreshes, let alone generational updates.

Give me a 2.0T AWD/Manual with appropriately sized brakes. Since Honda is on a kick with the "Sport" moniker these days, I would gladly take a TLX Sport with the aforementioned trim.

That concept does look good.
Would not want to have 400hp on a FWD platform. The traction control will be doing overtime to keep the car controlled. That or the car will be tuned to be boring, ie bad pedal response, computer making most decisions against the driver.

That's not really a coupe image. That's still a sedan. You can barely make out the line in the back door, but it's there. That, and the TLX Advanced right now is about $45k. Making the TypeS $50-$55k. Might be a high ask... but still undercutting the BMW M340i and comparable 4 series (which I think would be the competition with a turbo 6/400hp).

That's crazy. I never knew about that. I wonder what all the soccer moms in Odysseys, CR-V's, and Pilots would think about their Hondas after reading their article.

Thanks for the respect. I had nothing but Subarus for over a decade ('98 2.5RS, '02 WRX, and '09 STI), but then they stopped advancing their technology. The STI still uses basically the same motor it had 16 years ago!?! I am really hoping that the new STI is a ground breaking car again. Unfortunately, the latest issue of Car & Driver thinks that the next gen WRX will not even debut until late 2022. No word of the next STI yet. I really hope they are wrong with that timeline.

I think they would almost have to make the Type S version with AWD.

You're right! It is really hard to see in that image, but it is a 4 door sedan. One of the best looking 4 door sedans I have seen in a long time. Let's hope they don't change the production model too much from the concept.

This pic is easier to see the lines for the rear doors.

Might spark interest in the 30 or 40 something lower-mid income dad with a small 1 or 2 car garage..(?)
or an old folk that likes Buick Regals?

I would never want one of these. Sedans are boring to begin with, why continue making boring crap? Acura should just drop sedans all together and keep the RDX, MDX, make a $50-60K sports car, and NSX.
